Today was my sons 6 months check up. He did really good and only cried about 10 secs after his 4 shotsCry The doc said I can start him on pureed meats now a long with bread, toast, crackers, and little pieces of chicken. Now heres my question. The doc also said to give him ca rrots and chicken bones to chew on to help him teeth. Im not a doctor by any means but I dont find it safe for my baby to chew on darn chicken bones, or am I just being over protective?

Lol...i chewed chicken bones...n my happy lil 11month old boy is chewing one as well...works wonders...im a mom of 3 n i have done the same with the other children as well...he just gums it n gnaws it til the yummy chicken flavor is gone...under supervision of course....honestly the choking risk is minimal. ..its not a bone with the gristle still on it...just a bone...maybe a few scraps of meat on it for older babies. ..lol my big boy just tossed his bone as im typing this...lol yall worry too much...

yeh why not. cave people would've given their babies all sorts of bones. natural toy, not got any chemical residues, just natural wholesome flavour. and proper 'recycling'. Smile

chicken bones? for reals? please just in case get a second opinion-that just sounds way wacky. when my kids were babies i did what green suggested-frozen wash cloths and they worked wonders.

Heay Downgirl2182!

I can understand your concern, but yes!  Give the little angel the BIG leg bone to chew on. It's hard to break, but has some great flavor while helping to get those teeth in.

Also when he starts teething, give him some cold carrots to chew on.  It will help ease the pain, and has flavor, or big hunks of apple, or even a frozen banana!

Shots are always hard, on the baby and Mom.  I hated it as much as they did, also.  So I feel your pain.  But it needs to be done.  It's better than them getting a disease and dying!

Your doing good Mom,... your doing good.  Smile

Re: chicken bones for babies to chew ?

Look guys it sounds freaky but its one of those old school Grandma says kinda things... your child will not be able to splinter the bone in his mouth.  ( he should have told you the drum bone) but the belief is that the Marrow in the bones, do something to help the gums and the teeth come through, and supposedly to ease the babys soreness.   I guess its something along the lines of the old way of putting a steak on a bruise....

The only way your baby could possibly break the bone or get shards, is if he broke it, beating it on something....

But still I agrea with all the rest of you... there are way better methods now...

What were You thinking?!!

Re: chicken bones for babies to chew ?

Im glad you guys thought the same thing I did. Like foam said I wont even give my dog if I had one chicked bones. Im way to scared of him choking and I dont want him to get any bones splintered in his mouth. I do have plenty of teething toys and I use organic teething biscuits as well. Now as for his dad he thinks Im being paranoid and a freak and says he will give them to him. Screw that I will break his face if he does. He thinks im to over protective of our son and dont let him do anything. HELLO hes only 6 months old

My mother chewed on carrots as she was teething... caused her gums to get tough and they ended up having to slice her gums open for the teeth to pop out... she was evidently in a lot of pain since they couldn't break through... why don't you just get one of those vibrating teethers that you can stick in the freezer?

As for chicken bones... sounds like a choking hazzard to me

And it sounds a bit unsanitary as well...

That was my first thought.  Eiw.  I'd stick with teething rings and biscuits, leave the chicken bones for the stray cats in the neighborhood.

"How do you know I'm mad?" asked Alice.
"You must be", said the cat, "Or you wouldn't have come here"

Re: today

I wouldn't even give my dog chicken bones, carrots (raw) yes but chicken bones sounds like some witch Dr advice

Re: today

run hurry run far far away from this pediatrician... Chicken bones splinter not a good idea. ok, I have 4 kids and my teething secret is a a frozen washcloth (the thick velvet kind)  Get it wet but not soaked.  lay it on a plate flat in the freezer. After frozen Let your baby chew away. its cool and they love that it numbs and it allows them to bite down without worry of choking. When you wash it to rinse it twice in the rinse cycle without any softeners. When you use one put another in. A frozen washcloth will last a few hours.

I had the right to remain silent... but I didn't have the ability.
