My computer has been running really slow, when I click on Firefox, it takes about 5-10 mins to open. It also keeps freezing and won't unfreeze (most of the time) which means I have to keep rebooting. It's becoming extremely annoying. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to improve this?

Windows computer running slow & freezing
My computer is a few years old with Windows XP and was running very slow. I was going to buy a new one but my friend told me to reformat. I did and now its as fast as new!

Currently there are zero viruses that can affect Macs..
There is one form of malware (a trojan) with a few variants that can cause popups and steal your credit card information if a user is tricked into installing it on their Mac.. Compare that with the millions of trojans and viruses for Windows and it is almost like there are no viruses and the likes for Macs, but not technically..

XP eh?

If you have updated to Expansion pack 3, you may want to consider uninstalling it and turning of automatic updates.  XP Expansion pack 3 is buggy

Internet Exploerer, which would include the Messenger applet in the background was upgraded to version 7.  You might want to consider turning of Messanger in the configuration files using selective start uo, and deleting all temporary Internet,History, password, cookies, and FOrm data in Internet Explorer as the data stored from IE 6 isn't compatable with Messanger and/or IE7 (Messanger is Microsoft's personal Snooper in the background)

Likewise I don't use Firefox cause I don't trust Mozilla (old habbit, they are snopperware makers) but you need to delete cookies, annd such on FIrefox every so often to prevent backward compatibility issues and Firefox having to waste time sorting though a whole lot of cookies to find the most updated version.

You may just have a bunch of programs running at startup which will slow EVERYTHING down.  (Many programs you download will default to start on boot.)  Even if CCleaner seems to make your system faster, you should still turn off programs that you don't use.  In XP click start, then run, then type "msconfig".  In Vista type "msconfig" in the 'Start Search' box.  Your system configeration box will pop up.  Click on 'startup' and see how many programs you have running.  Uncheck the boxes for the programs you know for sure you DON'T need to run on boot.  Just make sure you're careful, turn off the wrong thing and your computer may not boot properly, or you may also accidentally turn off your antivirus, too.  Many will show the title of the program, but if you're unsure, just Google it.  If you have tons of programs running, and you turn them off, you'll be amazed at the speed you'll pick up.

Good suggestion. You might want to give this a try instead of msconfig. It's more thorough and generally safer. I prefer the standalone .exe and have been using it for years. In fact it's a mainstay of my USB stick for system trouble shooting and general maintainence.

Is your entire computer slow, or JUST Firefox?  If it's the entire computer then:

  • Do you have anitivirus installed, and is it current?
  • Do you have an antispyware program installed and current (and have you run it?)

You may also want to try CCleaner, to get rid of any remaining 'junk' - for most people, these things will cure most issues on Windows - although it's possible you have deeper issues (i.e.; broken Windows).

If your slowness is limited to just Firefox, you may want to try clearing the cache, cookies, etc, and download/reinstall with the newest version of Firefox.

I would also like to mention that if you had one of THESE, you would not have this type of problem and would not have to fuss with all this sillyness.. Consider that if you end up tossing your current PC into the trash (or pretend that these issues dont bug the heck out of you)..

Re: Computer running slow & freezing

Still trying to sell that Mac Hubby, huh!..lol. If it makes you happy, I am getting my son one for Christmas Smile

It's my entire computer. Yes I just recently downloaded AVG. I have webroot spysweeper also on it. It's not just limited to Firefox, it's anything I try to open. So if I download CCleaner will it not clog up my computer even more?

Re: Computer running slow & freezing

CCleaner will not clog up anything, and will probably root-out a lot of that Windows-prone junk.

Also, you say you downloaded AVG - so, we should assume that you also installed it and have RUN/Scanned your computer with it? - and we assume that you have updated your Spysweeper and SCANNED your computer with it ?

ask yourself... "why am i putting myself through all this?" If you had a Mac you would be USING your computer right now instead of fighting with it.. not a sales-pitch, just a fact..
