Dishes for Microwave

So I am he!!bent on getting new dishes this month! We keep saying we are going to but then time gets away and we forget. Here's the thing...we are looking for dishes that actually don't get hot in the microwave versus claiming they do! We have gone through 3 sets of dishes in the last 18 months non of which we liked. So anyone actually have dishes that don't get hot in the microwave that they can recommend?

"dont get hot in the microwave" ??

if the food in the dish gets hot, and the food is touching the dish, the dish is GUNNA get hot.. Unless there is some kind of new multi-layered, nitrogen-filled dishes that i've never heard of.

Well where the food is, will probably be hot... but high quality ceramic/glass dishes don't get hot from the microwave itself... meaning you could put just the dish in, microwave it, and there shouldn't be a huge temperature change if any... one day I'ma stop watching the discovery channel.

Well I guess I could have continued with the: "meaning when you go to get the dish with food from the microwave, you should be able to handle it without pot holders... the sides where there isn't any food sitting should remain cool... and if you microwave a mug, you should be able to grab the handle without burning yourself... but who needs fingerprints anyway?"

You need to look for high quality ceramic or glass dishes.

The microwaves pass through them rather than aggitate them so they stay cooler... But depending on what's mixed with the glass or ceramic can cause them to get hot in the microwave, being why I said you need 'high quality' ones...

I'm in the same boat of looking for new dishes, albeit for a different reason (new house, new decor), and have heard some good reviews on Corelle dinnerware staying cool... although I've seen a few people say they get hot too... but maybe that's their stoneware... I've noticed a lot of stoneware reviews mentioning them getting hot, or cracked in the oven, or hot dishwasher, etc... since stoneware is made with lower heat than ceramic, I suppose that could be why.

On another note... older dishes tend to be higher quality... less additives in order to stretch product and increase profit... that's why my gramma's dishes don't get hot... but mine do... just a thought in case you inherited some dishes or something...

YES... Corelle certainly does get VERY HOT!!! Glad I just bought one dish and one bowl to try. I think I will check out the cool whip bowl like previous poster. I'm 74 yrs old and have 53 year old dishes. I keep changing out microwaves thinking it's the microwaves fault the dishes get so hot. They didn't use too. ?????

Re: Dishes for Microwave

Just from my past life working at macys, anything made from bone or ash will not get hot in the micro. Anything made from stone (ie stoneware fiestaware etc) WILL get hot. Thats all my tired lil brain can think of at the moment.

I know this is an old post but after i just burned the sh!!T out of my fingers taking a plate out of the microwave that was only there for 40 seconds, I now see the value in dishes that dont get hot (or as hot) in the microwave.. You could say "my opinion has evolved" ..
