Drive showing as unallocated - can I recover my stuff?

Help!  I have an external hard drive that I was cleaning up this weekend.  Everything was fine and then POOF the drive didn't show under my computer anymore.  Sometimes my laptop is finicky so I brought the drive to work.  It won't show there and it doesn't show on my hubby's laptop either.  He knows more about pc's than I do and checked on the drive in computer management.  The drive shows as unallocated.  I am about to try PC Inspector File Recovery to see if I can get my stuff.  Any other ideas?

TIA!

Did you change any settings for the hardware itself? It doesn't sound like your hard drive has failed, so data recovery shouldn't be an issue. Try unplugging the drive's power cable and then plugging it back in again. Did you install any new drives? If so there might be a drive letter conflict, but that would only happen if you installed any new drives, and can be solved in computer management by changing the drive letter associated with that drive.

No, didn't change or install anything; had already tried unplugging/replugging everything.  After searching online last night found a couple of partition recovery programs that did find the drive, started to recover partition (aka my stuff) but I have to buy the program in order for it to complete the recovery.  Trying to see if my husband's work has a partition recovery program...hopefully they do and I won't have to purchase new software.  Thanks though for your reply!

Well if you just trying to get your data back try check this page out

I'm a strong believer in open source software myself, mostly because if you use it, and it doesn't work, well it's not like it cost you anything.

I'll check it out and file the info away for later...husband's work was able to recover the partition.  Whew!  Not that anything on that disk was earthshatteringly important...but it was "my stuff," ya know?

Thanks again!
