I bought a Macbook Pro about a year ago. I have yet to find a program that is compatible to Mac where I can put smile faces & emoticons in my emails! Does anyone know of any? "Smiley Central", "Incredimail", & other programs that are compatible with PC's don't work on Mac.

emoticons & smilies for Mac Mavericks
With Mavericks, you just press control, command and space bar at the same time to get all the emoticons and symbols you could ever need.

When I followed your advice to copy and paste the emoji characters, it only copies the info and not the character. Why?

I dunno? Maybe where you are pasting it to does not support these extended characters? Where are you pasting it too?
When you paste it into another Mac program, like say, Mail, does it work?

Re: emoticons & smilies for Mac
I was posting to FaceBook, I tried several different ways to do it, double clicking puts the character there but when I click post, it goes away. I have OSX 10.8.2, so I figured it would work. It does work on my mail app though.

Re: emoticons & smilies for Mac

I dont know what you mean by "double clicking" , but when right-click on the Trademark icon in the Character Map, and select "Copy character info", then go to Facebook, right-click in my status box, and select "paste", the character and extra info is pasted in.  if i delete the extra info, leave just the character, and hit "post", it looks fine.®

Not on my Mac, it will only paste the info, not the actual character.

I don't have Lion. Is there still a way to do smiley beyond Smile Sad :-} etc. A friend of mine just did a pink pig and a yellow smiley with its tongue sticking out.

The newest version of Mac OS X Lion includes a built-in Emoji font - all the smileys and funny icons we could wish for!

Re: emoticons & smilies for Mac
Thanks for this tip but I'm sorry for being stupid here but I see the emoticons but can't figure out how to get the image into my email. I did a copy and past information and got text but no image. Also I'd like to be able to have the emoticon option on my toolbar as a shortcut but don't see how I can do this. Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks.

it all depends on what program you are using for email.

I use the MacMail program. Oh, I see... I just dragged it successfully this time. Too easy. So is there a way to have this Character box on my toolbar, so it's easy to access? That would be nice?

Re: emoticons & smilies for Mac
I am so lost! My question is the same as the last one about having all the emoticons in a toolbar for easy access. I am very new to computers. I have a Macbook Pro and I don't even know how to copy & paste--so that is out of the question. Please, if there is anyone who can help, I would appreciate it. My "help" bar shows that I have the capacity to have these things, I just don't know how to get them where I want them. We have no Apple stores near where I live either. I would like to have the Character box as a tool bar also. It says I have the OS Lion or whatever, so I should have this stuff. I feel like a real dummy, but I need help to add a little extra cheer to my e-mails. My e-mail is through my phone company and it is Qwest/Century Link now. Is that a problem? Thank you to whoever can decipher this and help!!

Re: emoticons & smilies for Mac

As far as i know, there is no emoticon toolbar for Lion (although you might want to search in the app store)..

PS: Copy and paste is a basic tenant of computing, and it's one of the simplest things to do!
To copy: click on whatever you want to copy, or drag your mouse over and select it
then, on the menu select EDIT, then COPY - whatever you selected is now copied into the clipboard (memory)
To paste: go to wherever you want to stick (paste) whatever you just copied, click your mouse there, go to EDIT, and select PASTE - whatever you copied will be "pasted" right there! boom - simple!

When you get real fancy, instead of going to the menu, you can click the command button and the "C" button at the same time for copy, and the command button and the "V" button for pasting.

Re: emoticons & smilies for Mac
I will look for this Apple Color Emoji. I've seen the word Emoji, so it must be somewhere in this machine. Oh, god--I should have been Amish!!

Re: emoticons & smilies for Mac
Dear Hubby.... why do people use terms like "girly man" when they wish to be disparaging. There must be some non-gender put downs. Anyway as long as emoticons are used sparingly whether from male or female they are just Fun. Over use is not good. I suppose a tough guy could always send a growly face or something more like a "real" man. I love my Mac and would also like to be able to use emoticons if i feel like it. I do use the special characters from time to time but as mentioned before they do need enlarging and they are only outlines but we take what we can get. Thank you for any help given to us. Susan

Re: emoticons & smilies for Mac
I totally agree w/ Bobee about someone should have developed a program with smileys & emoticons for Mac mail! We like the cute smileys too!

Re: emoticons & smilies for Mac
I love emoticons , i have a Mac and love that too. There are some small emoticon type things in the Special Characters feature, they have to be enlarged but are better than nothing however i am now looking for some to download.

Re: emoticons & smilies for Mac

I've never heard of any such program for a Mac.. what email program/service are you using ? If you're using something like Yahoo mail or MSN, you can use the Emoticon 'codes', which you can see HERE .

Another thing you could do is go to  any site with emoticons, right-click or Command-Click each emoticon, save it to a folder on your Mac, then just drag 'n drop the image files from where you saved them into your email messages (i think that should work!).  I would try it but i'm a tough-guy and if i emailed any of my friends a message with emoticons they would call me a girly-man.. Smile

Re: emoticons & smilies for Mac

Thank you ever-so much for your response hubby. You seem to be helping me out a lot on this site! I went to the Apple store & had them help me with this matter. We did set up a folder with smiles & emoticons but it is kind of a hassle to pull things out of a folder & then have to drop them in your email. Also the emoticons don't move, they remain stagnant. I use to have a PC and everything was compatible with that. I'm frustrated with my Mac! I thought that someone on this site might have another suggestion. You would think by now someone would of developed a program with smileys & emoticons for Mac mail!
