I'm wondering if anyone has any theories why Mobile Me's "find my iPhone" is so slow? I've googled around and I cant find any reasons why.
Find My iPhone sends a "push" signal to the iphone, which should only take a few seconds, the iphone then gets it's GPS coordinates (only a few seconds), then sends the results to the Mobile Me service (should only take a few seconds) and MobileMe "finds your iPhone" on on a map.. It's pretty nifty but the whole thing should only take 5-10 seconds, instead, from the time you hit "find my iphone" until the time it "refines" the location can be 3-5 minutes.

Why, god WHY???

UPDATE!
The Mobile Me website/system got a makeover a few weeks ago and apparantly part of that updadate included faster tracking times for Find My iPhone. Now you can track your device in seconds - I've gotten locations as quickly as 5 seconds, and i think the longest I've had to wait was 45 seconds. It's way faster now and pretty much now allows you to do real-time tracking.

Why does Find My IPhone return a very LARGE circle on the map, not showing precisely where the phone is located?

If I use the compass figure with Google maps, it will indicate my PRECISE location. It will show me moving along a highway with an EXACT pinpointing of my location. If THAT technology is available, why can't FIND MY IPHONE do the same thing?

Re: Why is Find My iPhone so slow ?

I have decided that Find My iPhone is slow and inaccurate (large circle location on the map) intentionally so that it can't be used as a very expensive tracking device.. For example tossing your iPhone under the seat of your ex-girlfriends car to track/stalk her..

There is no reason why the tracking cant be instant and why the location can't be pinpointed like in the map app - it must be intentional.

Re: Why is Find My iPhone so slow ?

I found an old post about location services. It said that with 3G enabled the phone was taking a long time to locate. Since that's one of the steps it might be worth looking into. The person suggested disabling 3G. Settings, general, network then slide to turn off 3G. Seems contrary ro rational thought, Edge being faster than 3G but maybe for this one thing. I didn't really find anything on Google either about the 3GS. That's a weird problem.

if i'm using the phone, the location services gets the location in seconds with 3G on or off - on my old 1st gen EDGE phone it also only takes a few seconds..
but, when getting the locations from the Mobile Me Find My iPhone page it takes minutes.. many, many minutes..

The only thing i found on Google was other people complaining that it was slow.

Could that be their server? I did see several complaints of problems with the website being slow. Too much traffic maybe.

Find My iPhone is slow

Could be - but the rest of Mobile Me is "snappy".. uploading large backups, images or videos to the gallery, etc, is all fast.. maybe the Find my iPhone runs on a different cluster or something.. or maybe it's just poor design.
