Ok, so yesterday during my lunch break I was heating up some baked chicken, when I took the chicken out and started eating it I noticed a little piece of foil on the bottom of the tupperware. I got a little freaked out but I remembered I had put the foil over the chicken when I had put it in the oven when I first cooked it. Then I thought, " Well isn't something bad supposed to happen if you put foil in the microwave??". Nothing happened, I dont know if it was because the foil was just a tiny piece or what. So, have any of you ever put foil or some type of silverware in the microwave on accident? Did anything happen liket sparks flying or turning your microwave black?? Is it really true something bad happens if you put foil/silverware in the microwave??? I've never tried it so I don't really know if it's true or just another myth.......

Re: Foil in the Microwave.....

So for a while I lived with my brother and our friend. The house was like living in a war zone. No rules of combat, anything goes. Well, my brother decides to buy a house and split up our happy family. His girlfriend decides that all of his old bachelor stuff sucks and that he needs new stuff. One new item he needed was a microwave. From the very second he bought a new one we started planning the demise of the old one. Out to the backyard we went. One extension cord got the microwave far enough form the house to not burn it down.  We performed a battery of tests to see how much sparks we could get to fly. After a while that got boring so we tossed a hunk of metal in, set it to the full time possible and went back inside. When we came back out it was on fire. Flames coming out of the top. It was amazing. I suggest every one do it but just don't blame me when you burn down the house.

We do the Salem Peep Trials in the microwave every year.  Strange, I know.  The more stale they are the more fun they are to watch.

If there any of the peeps that weigh the same as a duck, they are put in a microwave.   We don't have a pond.

We aren't anti-witch or peep or even watery tart.  We just have a strange sense of humor.  We try to keep it light and weird when we can, for a few laughs.

Thank you, for the best laugh I've had all day.

I think I may have to get some Peeps, too, when I replace the microwave.  this is going to be fun, haha!

yes metal utensils many a time, always good for noise and sparks. one of the kids also used one of my fine china bowls for heating soup in the microwave--the gold melted right off Sad

barcodes on meat wrappers also spark up sometimes

Re: Foil in the Microwave.....

Pffft, don't buy a crappy one, buy yourself a shiny new one, and use the one you have now.  What better excuse to get new appliances, if you man gets a light show?  But yeah, outdoors, and a fire extinguisher are HIGHLY recommended.  Oooh, I can't wait until I can try it!!!

Re: Foil in the Microwave.....

Tried to heat myself a cup of water for tea. Spaced out. Didn't realize I was putting in a metal cup with rubber lining. To make a long story short, those two things don't work well in the microwave. The rubber caught fire and the metal started discharging sparks. The cup was on fire, the microwave was near catching, so I blew it out and tossed it out the door. The cup was totally done for, the microwave totally black on the inside, and the house smelled liked burned rubber. This is no myth.

Re: Foil in the Microwave.....

I once ordered a cheesesteak while bowling, Well the outer wrapper was paper, so I stuck it in their microwave (luckily my best friend owns the joint) well... APPARENTLY they had wrapped it twice, first layer with a foil backed paper. Yeah, it went into flames. I had to buy her a new microwave Sad

Re: Foil in the Microwave.....

Hahaha!  I've seen an all out laser light show in a microwave.  You know those paper party plates that look like they've got glitter on them?  Yeah, they do weird, pretty things in the microwave.  We had the "60" version of the plates in the link back in March for Dad's birthday.  My sister made the mistake of reheating some baked ziti.  Ooops!

Last weekend or so, Boyfriend and I were at my parent's place, and Dad had Food Network on.  There was a show called "Food Detectives", and the guy was covering things you should never, ever put in a microwave.  Who knew, white grapes are on the list?  They flare up like kindling!  Peeps, those marshmallow bunnies coated in colored sugar, go crazy, too.

Boyfriend and I have to replace our microwave soon.  It's dying a slow death.  Once we get a new one, I plan on bringing the old one outside, and putting "bad" things in it until it explodes or something.  Don't worry, I'll videotape it.

Thats funny! Who would put marshmellows in the microwave though?! lol. Yes please do videotape it, I'm tempted to try putting weird things in it but I don't want to burn down my house! lol, maybe I'll go to the Goodwill or Savers and buy an old used microwave and experiment with it!! hehe Tongue

Re: Foil in the Microwave.....

Honestly, most of the stuff he did on the show, I'd have never thought to microwave.  Like grapes.  I can't think of a single good reason to microwave a bunch of grapes, other than the spectacular light show....

Re: Foil in the Microwave.....

You forgot carrots... carrots have a lot of minerals in them that can spark and flare up... but I think this only refers to regular carrots...

And I've put marshmallows in the microwave Smile .... I wanted to melt tem for my peanut butter and marshmallow sandwich when I was little... those things GROW like crazy

Re: Foil in the Microwave.....

That's actually a valid reason (in theory, anyway) to nuke a marshmallow, lol.  Carrots....yeah, I got nothing.

Re: Foil in the Microwave.....

the problem with metal of any sort (whether aluminum foil or silverware) is that it can produce an arc of electricity inside the microwave. this is a problem because it can cause a fire if in a  plastic or paper cooking container/box.  so the aluminum is not heating and causing a fire, but the arc can do some major damage.
