If you know any that aren't on the list, please let us know and post them on this page.

ii) Setting up and instructions

1. First off you need to install firefox, if you aren't already using firefox get it here
2. Then you have to install the addon adblock plus, download and install it from here

3. Navigate to adblock plus through Tools->adblockplus

4. Now you're on the main screen for adblock. Click the button "Add filter" and enter the desired tracker URL.

Importing Filter lists

Navigate to filters->import filters

Click it and navigate to the file, in this case tracker_adblock_list2.txt. Select "Append" when you're prompted, press "apply" and the filters are ready.
You will have to check back every now and then for new filters and repeat this step.

iii) Explanation

Adblock filters out the links specified from the page. It prevents the filtered tags and URLs from loading so no information is passed to the tracker, thus the tracker is pointless and useless.

Import filters in Adblock Plus

I got a new laptop, installed Firefox and the latest Adblock Plus and then tried to follow the directions here but when I get to step 4, "filters" then "import filters" there's no more Menu Bar in Adblock Plus.

So how do you do this now?

Re: Import filters in Adblock Plus
I had to go in Adblock to "Add filter subscription" and copy and paste from the filter TXT file.

Re: How to block Myspace Trackers

Thanks.

You can use the Custom filters tab for this also right?

Also, sorry if this was double posted.  Just delete one of them.  Firefox isn't showing that I post here and giving me "Error".  I'm not sure why.

Re: How to block Myspace Trackers for Chrome?

Download the text file and open it. Select all then copy all. In Chrome click the wrench in the top right corner. Click tools then extensions. Click options next to Adblock. Then click Blacklist. Click edit then paste in the copied text. Click save. That will let AdBlock block those domains. Beware that Adblock in Chrome doesn't always work. I run the Dev version and half the time I still see adds.

Re: How to block Myspace Trackers

I am not a member of Myspace but sometimes like to check out what some friends are posting on their pages.
If they have trackers, does that mean I will show up?

If they have a tracker, they will see your IP address, which will only tell them that someone from a general area or city viewed it.

Re: How to block Myspace Trackers

Okay, I just followed the instructions to block MySpace trackers. My question is- how do I know for sure that I did it correctly and that it is going to work? I don't want a false sense of security if I did something wrong and it really isn't installed. Thanks.

The link to obtain the text file is not working. It says the file is missing. Is the site where it is at down or something? Just thought I would give a heads up.

if you don't want to download the list, right click on it, choose "copy link", follow the rest of the directions until the import step, in the open box paste the link that you copied, then finish the directions

Re: How to block Myspace Trackers

Well yeah. Or so you can check in on your kids profile without your child knowing that you are keeping an eye on them. Allowing them to feel independent and allowing you to feel safer. But for me it's totally about stalking.

Re: How to block Myspace Trackers

Well as my kids don't use the net unless supervised, and have a myspace based on the fact that I have their log in info so I can check on them (I have explained why and they are ok with it.), and I don't allow them to have a computer in their bedrooms (won't hear any "OMG my 12 year old daughter ran off with a 42 year old marine after sitting in their bedroom alone with billions of strangers and I don't know why?" crap from me)

To me sneaking around behind my kids backs is a breach of their trust, as a parent it's up to me, not software or other adults, that is meant to look after their well being. At least they know I'm 100% straight up honest with them.

So yeah for me it's all about the stalking, I find 99.9% of people who want these things blocked are either paranoid, or are checking up on the "EX" or their partners. I mean how many do you see say online. "I wish to check out a friends site, or an old friends site, but I don't want them to know...." I mean why wouldn't you want your friends, who should be on your friends list, wanting to know you've viewed their "PUBLIC SOCIAL SITE" page. Sort of the same with the kids, if you can't view your own childs page openly, then you might want to look into family counselling, their is something obviously wrong in your home.

Don't get me wrong I use adblock plus myself, but that's it, it's "ADBLOCK" not "INVADEPRIVACY Plus"

I mean people say "but it's an invasion of my privacy" well what about the person your checking up on's privacy? Don't wantto be tracked dobn't visit their page, that simple.
Because I would honestly question the motives of any friend who didn't want me knowing they were looking at my page, and the only people from experience who don't want me knowing usually are up to no good.

Re: How to block Myspace Trackers

The word stalking sounds like your hiding in the bushes or peeping in someones window. Looking at information on someones profile isn't a crime and anything that is up there they chose to put up for people to see.

In the case of your children i understand where you are coming from.
But what if for example a guy looks at a girls page that he knows from school or recently met and hasn't built up the courage to friend them? Girls make it seem like no big deal when they friend people but dudes think really hard about these things, profile trackers may make a person out to be a creeper when that isn't necessarily the case. so what if they're checking out a picture, its a picture if it did that much harm it shouldn't be online in my opinion.

Re: How to block Myspace Trackers

I totally agree. How can you expect something that is put out on the Internet to be viewed without restriction only to be viewed by a specific set of people? MySpace and other social networking sites have gone to great lengths to give you the power to choose who views your stuff with extraordinary granularity. They also put your profile out as "suggestions" for people to meet if you don't use the security and lock down your profile. How can you call someone a stalker if they are following MySpace's suggestion to meet you, then viewing your page and getting to know you based on information that you are making public? If you don't want people "in your business" then use your security settings and lock down your page!

Re: How to block Myspace Trackers

When did viewing posted comments that are available to the general public become stalking? If that's the case, then the New York Times Online has a whole bunch of stalkers on a daily basis! The Internet, and especially social networking, has given many people the audacity to post things publically that they would never say personally in public. Sometimes this is a good thing, but in other cases, they end up posting slanderous, hurtful, untrue information about people that needs to be removed, or made unavailable to the public. It is advantageous to be able to monitor pages anonymously in this instance so as not to inflame the situation further. Luckily, MySpace has fairly well written terms of service and is fairly responsive to violation complaints.

"Made publically available." "For public consumption." "The public." These are generic terms for an anonymous grouping of people. You are agreeing to the anonymity when you make your page available to "the public". Using trackers and identifying everyone that accesses your page removes the anonymity. Continuing the analogy, imagine how insane it would be to try to track all visitors to The New York Times Online. I guess I'm saying, rather than "Don't wantto be tracked dobn't visit their page, that simple," it should be "Don't post something to 'the public' that you don't want to be seen by 'the public.'"

Re: How to block Myspace Trackers

Thanks AE, I just look at it this way, I set the example for my kids, if they caught me being sneaky and dishonest, then they would then a) lose trust in me, and b) say "well if Dad can lie and sneak around behind my back, then hey it's ok for me to do so to."

I mean I don't invade my childrens privacy by reading their emails, but I know to follow it up if I see a message titled "Subject: I'll get you beeeiotch". in their inbox. (not that they ever have had anything like it thankgod.)

Think we have so many dysfunctional families and personal relationships these days, because we've allowed society and electronic media dictate how we relate to our kids. It's too easy to just shrug your shoulders and pass the blame.

I mean I have friends who complain about their kids, quite young at that, texting friends and such all night, and it's funny they agree when I ask "well who's allowing them to own a phone letting them take it to bed to text all night?"

I dunno, maybe I'm old fashioned? but I always thought part of being a parent or an adult was having responsibility.

Re: How to block Myspace Trackers

Anonymous~

I couldn't have put it better myself. It's not about being old fashioned, it's about showing up as a parent and being present. So many parents are willing to let other people take responsibility or place the blame elsewhere (they saw it on TV, it's those video games, the song said to do it) when their kids go askew. I work with over 300 families in a multitude of services and see it all the time. It is never the child's fault they made the wrong decision and it most definately is not the parent's fault!

My children also do not have internet in their rooms and won't until they leave our home and can pay for their own. We know their passwords and inform them that we will check. Mini once asked how that showed trust in her by having her passwords. Mr.Pants response? "You are 15 and we are in the trust but verify stage of life until further notice." We only check things if we see a change in her behavior (which I've written about before on here) and we also tell her we will or have done so. Sneaking around can fundamentally alter the nature of your relationship with your children. Mini's stepmother ruined not only her relationship with Mini but Mini's relationship with her biological father when she hacked into her myspace and email without permission. Trust is a two way street and children need to be respected also.

I know this is the wrong thread for where this conversation went but couldn't help it...ZK

Re: How to block Myspace Trackers

Hi Zoo, I need to make an account for on here seeing how often I visit lol, and I think this is a good place for the conversation as to me it is on topic, this is about blocking trackers so no harm in discussing the moral aspects and reasons for tracking blocking and alternatives (for example, unless you know how to update the filter yourself, the current filter list here is useless and you are probably being tracked right now, as the makers of the trackers constantly update, and alot more trackers have come out changed since the lists last update rendering it pretty useless now)
I think people need to be made to think about the reasons they do what they do before they pick up bad habits without a second thought, if people can state reasons for blocking, thenjust as fair to have reasons for not doing so.

But I am glad to see another parent out there who can see the issue of trust and the potential it brings positive and negative, not just with our children but our relationships with partners friends and family.
And it's great to know their are other parents who still take responsibilites in their roles.

On a side note, if you really must secretly check up on people or want to have some fun with your friends (make them think you're posting comments from china or russia, then might want to try using proxies. Just be warned, if the country you are going through doesn't speak your language you could end up viewing pages in various different languages than your own. For those who don't know what proxies are, long story short it makes your IP and location appear different to what it actually is by going through other servers instead of connecting you directly to the site you are visiting. Google it, if you want the specifics.
But I will still urge people to think about the moral consequences. As they say, locks only keep honest people out ; )

If I'm not mistaken, Flock is based on Firefox so just install Adblock Plus from the add ons section of Mozilla's website  and follow the above directions.

Re: How to block Myspace Trackers

My IP is shown every single time I visit my friend's MySpace page. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. He has mixmap and I have used adblock for a couple of years now without problem. I don't use mixmap so I use him to test things out on his end. I thought he was just kidding but he asked me to visit his page then gave me my IP, how many times I visited, the times, etc. What's going on with this? Anyone experiencing the same problem???

Re: How to block Myspace Trackers

Yes have you updated your list which is now what.... 4 months old? Why don't you want people knowing you've viewed their page anyway??? got something to hide?

Re: How to block Myspace Trackers

Have you updated your filter list using the list provided above?
You said you're using adblock for years, but have you been upgrading it with new releases as they come out?
You don't really provide much info.
Is your friends tracker url listed in the provided filter list on this page?

Sites like profilesnitch and trackspace often update their trackers to get around being blocked, best bet is to get a copy of the url that your friends tracker is using and ban the whole domain associated with it, e.g if it's "www.myfriendstracker.com/trackme.jpg"
then add "www.myfriendstracker.com/*" to your filter list
the asterix, as usual is a wild card that will block everything that site has, even if they change the name of the image they are using to track people with.

but yeah I'm guessing the URL for his tracker isn't on your filter list.

Re: How to block Myspace Trackers

I just now saw this reply as I've been out of town for a few weeks.

To answer your questions:

*Have you updated your filter list using the list provided above?

I check back often and do update it regularly. I actually check at least once very 1-2 weeks to see if an updated list is available.

*You said you're using adblock for years, but have you been upgrading it with new releases as they come out?

I have version 1.0.2 installed. Is this the most current Adblock Plus release? Firefox usually notifies me of updates automatically.

*You don't really provide much info.

Not sure what else I can provide other than that he has mixmap installed and now the above info. When I go to his page Adblock shows a hit for mixmap it just never blocks it.

*Is your friends tracker url listed in the provided filter list on this page?

Yep. Mixmap.

I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. It's not rocket science and I follow the instructions and have been applying the filters for a good 2-3 years now.

Maybe it's never worked.

I'll set up my own mixmap account and see if it blocks it. The only problem with that is he gets some nasty viruses from using mixmap - even having updated anti-virus and firewall installed.

my own mixmap tracked me looking at my page yesterday. did mixmap change something?
