Based on the number of questions and comments posted in our forums, turning off or restarting an iPhone with a broken power button (the top button) seems to be a common question and issue.  So here is our quick-list of ways that you can restart your iPhone or turn off your iPhone if your power button is broken or not working.

Broken iPhone - No Power Button !How to Restart an iPhone with no top power button (no jailbreak):

Any of these methods will resart your iPhone without using the Power Button on top

  1. On the iPhone tap SETTINGS, General, Reset, Reset All Network Settings (note that this will erase VPN and WiFi settings or passwords)
  2. Wait for the battery to drain
  3. Plug in your iPhone to your Mac/PC with iTunes and choose "restore" (not recommended but it does the job)

How to turn off an iPhone with no power button or a broken power button (no jailbreak):

  • Enable Assistive Touch:  Tap SETTINGS, General, Accessibility, AssistiveTouch (near the bottom) and tap AssistiveTouch to ON.  You will now notice a small dark square with a circle in the middle (you can move this square anywhere).  Tap the dark circle to open the assistiveTouch menu, then tap Device and tap and HOLD the Lock Screen icon.  This will bring up the iPhone's Power-Off slider - no need for a power button any longer!  **Voted Best Method to turn off an iPhone with a broken power button

How to turn off an iPhone without the power button (Jailbroken):

  • Install SB Settings, "Shutdown", or "Lock" to power off the iPhone
  • Enable Assistive Touch described above

You can't "reset" a broken power button because it's... broken. You can work around it by reading the page above, or pay to have it fixed.

Re: How to Turn Off an iPhone Without the Power Button
I have been having the same trouble with mine the screen just goes black but is still in operation. I just read another article which said to hold both top power button and home button together until the screen goes black and then let them go but not to hold it any longer or the iphone will reset. although I can't see the screen to know when it goes black I tried it anyway and after 2-3 seconds felt a slight vibration in the phone so let them go which seemed to work the iphone then restarted and is working again. Hope this helps

Top button does not work on iPhone
That is starting to happen to mine! the only thing that fixed it was to let it run out of battery then re-charge it. Sorry for the non-help. I'd also like to know if there's a different way to do it.

Turn On an iPhone with broken power button
I have turned off my iPhone 4s using the assistive touch while charging. Now it wont turn on if I plug it back on the power socket. My power button is broken. How to turn it back on?

Re: Turn On an iPhone with broken power button

Unplug it for a minute or so, then plug it back in.. if the battery is dead, it could take up to 15-30 minutes to turn back on after you plug it in.
If it does not turn back on after 30 minutes, try a different charger/cable.
If it still does not turn back on, it's probably broken.
