Hi all, I'm new here and I have a question. How can I tell if an IP number that shows up on my website is from a proxy? Thank you.

You cant.. if he's not smart, and emailing from home and taking no steps to hide his identity, the best you can do is MAYBE (depending on his ISP and his email service) get his general location (within about 40 or 50 miles)

If he's taking even the simplest of steps to cover his tracks, you will never know where he is.

The way i see it, you have two choices:
1) contact the police - however unless he is making real threats of physical harm, my guess is they will laugh you out of the room
2) click the "spam button" on him and ignore him.. Every time you reply back to him you are feeding him with the attention that he wants.. once you stop and ignore him, he will soon tire and find someone else that gives him the attention that his mother apparently never did.

Ok, I get it. AOL is a proxy but not a free one. It must be subscribed to but is a proxy nonetheless. I didn't know that and I'm very glad to know that now. Thanks a bunch!

What is a Resolve Host?

Thank you both so much for your time. I really appreciate your patience in helping me to undertstand.

Resolving a host (a verb, not a noun) means taking the IP address and "resolving" it to a name, or visa-versa..

Basically, means "looking up" the host IP or name and matching it to an name or an ip.

The "host" means the server/computer..

Re: Now with a question

You can run it thru a site such as MaxMind and find out who the ISP is. Often times you can check that against IP Anonymizer lists.

Ok, that's similar to this website which I use frequently. http://www.whois.sc/ But I don't understand what the tell tale signs would be that would indicate the IP is thru a proxy.

how to tell if an IP is a proxy

I always get best results running the IP through here:
http://whois.domaintools.com/

What you want to look for is evidence that the IP has a server assigned. if it has a "reverse IP" entry or a 'real' name for "resolve host" then it is probably a server, and likely a proxy.

Someone must really love your site if they have to resort going through a proxy to get to it! What happened, did you ban someone from the site and they just cant live without it?

I use that site regularly but have not learned how to read what is there. That's what brings me here. If someone is using a proxy will it specifically say "reverse I" in the list of information? I'm very much interested in learning how to identify.

LOL, I don't know if it's so much that someone really loves my site as some people from another site feeling the need to keep tabs on my site. It's juvenile and I have long suspected that this has been going on. I would just really like to be able to identify which visitors to my site are proxy's and which are not because that tells me a story in and of itself.

I thank you for all of your help.

Re: how to tell if an IP is a proxy

I'll let hubby answer your other questions, but what message board system are you using? I know on some forums/bulletin boards you can see full referrer information about an IP. For example, if i see someone on my forum hitting the site from "hidemyass.com" i know theyre using a proxy. Also, a lot of proxies have odd geo-locations, or change location with each page reload. So if "sara" logs on to my site with an IP in Germany, then reads a post on the next page and suddenly her IP is in India, well im 99% sure shes on a proxy.

I have a message board thru Proboards. I get to see the IP of everyone who visits and alot of people visit who never register. I have been curious about some trouble makers who might be visiting my board via a proxy and I wanted to know how to differentiate a proxy from one that isn't. I looked at some of the proxy IP's and only one specifically said "Reverse IP" None of the others did and I just wondered if there's some other way for me to know for sure if an IP is coming from a proxy.

Thank you so much for your help.

Re: how to tell if an IP is a proxy

Still trying to learn, so please be patient with me.

Would the below be considered a Proxy? The following information by under "Resolve Host"

cache-dtc-ae06.proxy.aol.com

And I have seen this as well, is this a proxy? It says Reverse IP.

IP Location: Australia Internet Service Provider
Resolve Host: eth6331.nsw.adsl.internode.on.net
IP Address: 59.167.247.186
SSL Cert: www.drivenbylimo.com.au SSL Certificate has expired.
Reverse IP: 22 other sites hosted on this server.
Blacklist Status: Clear

Thank you for your time.

Technically AOL is a proxy, but not the kind that someone can use to hide their identity UNLESS they are an AOL subscriber/user.

The 59.167.247.186 is definatly a server - you can tell by the "22 other sites hosted" - it is most likely a proxy..
