yep F6 was the key.

Gateway Frequently Asked Questions shows

From the Start menu, click Control Panel.

Note: If your Control Panel is in Category View, click Printers and Other Hardware.

How do I enable or disable the touchpad on my computer?

The touchpad on your Gateway computer may be disabled by pressing a certain key combination. This same key combination also enables the touchpad.

On most Gateway notebooks, to disable or enable the touchpad press and hold the Fn key down and press the F6 or F7 key.

If you are still experiencing a problem, please contact Gateway support for further assistance.

Re: Touchpad Stopped Working
Omg thank you for this comment! F6 is my favorite F key now! I searched the web high and low trying to figure out what I had done to my laptop!! Even though I feel like an idiot for not knowing this in the first place, I was relieved when F6 turned my laptop back into a LAPtop again...instead of trying to use it by viewing a TV screen that was connected by HDMI and typing with a wireless keyboard and mouse pad!

Does it show the drivers are there and/or can you see the Touch pad in your Device Manager ?

The driver doesn't even show in my Device Manager. What do I do?

Re: My Touchpad Stopped Working....

check your laptop manufacturer's website to see if they have a downloadable driver.
