Is it OK to keep my laptop plugged in 24/7?

I have a fairly new laptop. Would it decrease the battery life? I rarely take it outside. It's easier just to keep it plugged in. Thanks.

Won't really hurt the battery to keep it plugged in because the internal charging circuitry cuts-off when the battery is charged. However, it could shorten the life of the transformer in the power cord.

As far as battery life in normal usage, all notebooks these days come with Li-ion (lithium ion) batteries. Unlike Ni-Cad (nickel-cadmium) batteries, Li-ion batteries DO NOT have a memory. Because of the chemical technology, you should NOT regularily drain the battery fully before recharging - this WILL shorten its life. But if you depend on the battery gauge in the tray of your taskbar to judge the amount of juice you have left, this gauge will be more accurate if you DO fully discharge the battery occassionally. Maybe every 20-30 cycles.

And sadly... Li-ion batteries have a lifespan and then they die. Modern batteries are toast after 500-700 cycles and then you need to get a replacement. If you are one of those that just lives with a dead battery after it croaks, this is all the more reason to be extra kind to your OEM power cord by not keeping it plugged in 24-7. After-market power cords are sometimes ill-fitting and can cause excessive wear and even damage the power jack on your notebook.

I generally use my netbook plugged in rather than using the battery.  I've been told that to extend the battery life, remove it if you're going to be plugged in for an extended period of time.  Can't hurt...

in the long run it might reduce the overall lifetime of the battery if you dont let it fully discharge and charge back up once in a while. the manufacturer of my laptop battery recommends letting it run down to 0%, then charging back to 100% at least one time per month.
