I have an dell inspiron 6400/E1505 And for some reason my PF continoualy climbs until my comp is locked up and I can to s*&^ until I do a hard shutdown. I have sat there and watched the processes but I cant seem to find anything that keeps using more and more memory. I had a virus approx 2 to 3 mo ago but I got rid of it and I have done every thing I can to try and find out what is causing it and how to fix it. Just so you know I am in Iraq and have very limited internet access and the access I do have is very slow. I appreciate your help.

Thats an MO of a "Worm", or in more recent times a Adware/Malware/Spyware program with there being quite a doozy of a once circulating around the Internet last month. As Halloween is just a day away a Halloween Virus is likely circulating as well.

Paging files and long History can also cause lagging problems so lets address that first

1) click on Tools in IE (sorry I use IE, hoping you do too)
2) Click on Internet Options
3) Click on Delete in Browsing Options
4) Click on Delete Temporary internet files, and Delete HIstory tabs, then Ok
5) Click on Browsing HIstory Settings and makles sure updates are automatic, disk space is about 10, and History is set to 0, then click okay

If you don't already have it try to download Advast http://www.avast.com/index.html and Spybot S&D http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

Load and run Advast first, note that you need to register a e-mail with them to get a activation code that is good for 14 months, but updates are free, and all they ask for is the password again for a new activation code after 14 months.

After Advast is installed, and if MCfee or Norton is installed...uninstall Norton/Mcfee cause they are sellouts and everything Spybot is about to catch came though them as "approved advertisers"

Install and run Spybot S&D. On average a previously protected by Norton/Mcfee Computer averages 33 malware/spyware and 3 trojans

If you have an older computer (pre 2005) betterinternet might be lingering and using VX22finder http://www.cybertechhelp.com/download/file/vx2finder-for-windows-2000-and-xp can expose it and destroy it.

Just download and run and hit the "click to find" button. clicking delete these files buton on right (if turns on) gets rid of a Virus like advertiser bot.

Re: Page File Usage History"

Hi scrappy156us AKA Seth,

First off, thank you for serving our nation.

I've run into this problem before. I found that the easiest way to determine what's creating that problem was to use Sysinternal's (now Microsoft's) Process Explorer. You can click on the process sucking up all the CPU/memory resource and then sort the "child" process by CPU/memory usage. Once you ID it, you can then decide if you want to kill the process and then maybe even delete the offending process starter.
I don't know if I can put a direct link to the program here, so Google "Process Explorer" and it should be the first hit listed.

Hope this helps!
