program to view corrupted jpeg file?

At work one of the other employees took some pictures of a surgical patient for our records. We use a card reader to add the photos into our program. The card reader wouldn't read the pictures and when we put the card back in the camera it just showed question marks instead of the photos. That same card would show new pictures I took from the came camera, a Cannon. I tried using a different card reader and connected the camera to my computer by USB with the card in the camera. I did get the thumbnails onto my desktop. They won't open with windows picture viewer. They wouldn't open with windows paint, Lexmark's photo editing software, or paint.net. I tried to upload them to Flickr and photobucket and both said error corrupted file. Any ideas for recovering these corrupted files. I'd even settle viewing them and doing screenshots. We didn't find the problem until the next day retaking the pictures wasn't an option. Not to mention you can't before and during pictures after you've sewn some one up. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Re: program to view corrupted jpeg file?

In my never ending quest I have found a free program that does a damn good job of recovering jpeg's from memory cards. I've used it numerous times at work now. We had a handful of memory cards that were splitting apart and photos were being lost left and right. I used it on friday to recover 139 photos from one of our nurse's memory cards. She somehow lost all of the photos when she took the card out of the camera.? I was able to pull all of them up with this program. I highly recommend it.

It's rare with the better made flash cards, but even the better made flash cards can loose there integraty or demagnatize  causing data loss on the flash drive...espcially if you create friction while handling the flash card or have static electricity on you or man handle the flash card in/out of a reader (metal on metal jiggling you know...bzzzt,bzzt)

This however sounds like the Photos where copied and deleted out of the Camera Memory/card  from the drag and drop but the THumbnails were still in memory (some cameras generate a separate thumbnail image with a linking code) and  the reason why the thumbnails "malfunction" is because the pictures they belong to are in the program they were uploaded to (leaving the thumbnails behinds and deleting the photos in memory/on flash)

Unfortunately the photographs did not make into the program we use to store our photos. Usually they do not drop and drag. They create the account and then use the import photo tab. from there they check boxes next to the photo and hit import. At this point I'll probably suggest we take that card out of circulation.

Re: program to view corrupted jpeg file?

I downloaded four different recovery programs and all failed to load the jpeg. Total loss. Man, I really wanted this one to work. Oh well.

Yeah.

That is too bad - I was hoping your trial and error would have given me a new piece of software for my arsenal.

Thanks for trying - some of the comments on the recovery tools pointed toward a low success rate.

Re: program to view corrupted jpeg file?

I stumbled upon some freeware from Piriform the makers of CCleaner. It's called Recuva. I downloaded it and tried it out on a memory card that had all the photos deleted. It recovered all of the deleted photos. From what I can tell this program only recovers deleted items that have not been written over.  Once you write over it you'll need something else. It worked great. It recovered the photos and let me save full resolution copies to me desktop. From time to time pics are accidentally deleted and this will fix that right up.

Good job!!!

Isn't it funny about computers that once you sink your teeth into a problem, it's hard to let it go.

I've been saying for awhile that best qualification to being a computer expert - is stubbornness and dogged determination.

I'll keep that program in mind - thanks!

Re: program to view corrupted jpeg file?

I used "repair corrupted jpg" in Google and came up with some interesting links.

I think I like this link - comment #2 - which addresses the corruption on the card rather than trying to fix the .jpg file straight up. Fixing the file is akin to data recovery and thus, difficult with varying levels of success.

Try the keywords, the "free dowloads" they lead to, and this link.

Re: program to view corrupted jpeg file?

Awesome, thanks. I just emailed that to my work email. I'm off till Friday so it'll have to wait till then. Unfortunately the nurses decided it was a loss and to move on so they deleted all the files on the disk. I'll have to make due with the files I saved to my computer. I'll let you know if it works. Thanks Ashton.
