Restarting Iphone Without Using Sleep/Wake Button
Ok baby slobbered on the IPHONE 1st generation now the Sleep/Wake/Power botton won't work. I can't hold it and the menu down to reset. I need to reset cause the section where No. 1-6 is on EVERY PAGE is a dead zone. Unresponsive to touch. When I go to Settings, General Settings and Network it falls under the DEADZONE. Am I screwed? How do I reset this thing? No warranty. Don't want to pay crazy cash to fix would rather try to DIY (do-it-yourself) first.Any suggestions. I wish i could switch the screen upside down cause I can touch sensor the bottom just fine. How do I reset this thing?

Unfortunately you will have to backup and then restore and then backup again through itunes to restart it. Its a pain in the ass but my iphone 4's power/sleep button broke and the phone froze.

Re: Restarting Iphone Without Using Sleep/Wake Button
What if my Sleep button on the top of the Iphone doesn't work, and my screen is frozen? Then How do I restart my phone? I could turn it off by waiting for the battery to drain, but then how do I turn it on?

Re: Restarting Iphone Without Using Sleep/Wake Button

is it still in warranty? Does it look all banged up like it's obvious you dropped it? if it's still in warranty and you take it back to the Apple store, they may just hand you a new one. if it is out of warranty they may be able to tell you the best work-around.. or.. you could buy a new one :-)

Re: Restarting Iphone Without Using Sleep/Wake Button

Actually, many people do not realize that they can simply walk into an apple store for help. Also, i have posted many helpful comments and links other suggestions below, which clearly you were too busy to read. So therefore, I reject your request to shut up..

It means that a backup of all your music, photos, apps, settings, etc, will be created and stored in iTunes, so that if your iPhone gets erased, fubar'd, or if you ever get a new iPhone, you can then "restore" everything to it.

Re: Restarting Iphone Without Using Sleep/Wake Button
My sleep button is Also broken. Went into "recovery mode". Couldn't restore on my computer because I iTunes said I have to have the latest version of iTunes to restore, but here's the catch. I'm still running OS X Tiger version 10.4.11 so I can't update to the latest version of iTunes until I install OS X 10.5.0 Leopard. So I had to restore on my wides laptop which is running Leopard. So does anybody know where I can get a copy of Leopard that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. My Mac is a G5 so I can't use Snow Leopard because it isn't an intel based Mac. Luckily My contact info was backed up on mobile Me. I was Jailbroken too and I have back ups on my Mac but I can't even Jailbreak because in order to Jailbreak I have to put my phone into DFU mode which requires holding down the sleep button and the home button simultaneously. Any help would be muchly appreciated. Thanks. Jeff

Re: Restarting Iphone Without Using Sleep/Wake Button
I had the same issue with my phone, I got it wet the screen went dark. I had it sit in rice for 3 days, turned it back on, everything was working but the screen was still dark. I went to setting and brightness, turned it all the way down, had it sit overnight, next day turned it all the way up and voila it worked again. Hope this helps!

Re: Restarting Iphone Without Using Sleep/Wake Button

if setting in (dry) rice fixed it, that would indicate it was wet or had excessive moisture inside.. had you dropped it in water, or did you know that it was wet? i'm guessing you did, since you put it in rice?

Re: Restarting Iphone Without Using Sleep/Wake Button
Just to clarify - you can restart your iPhone if the power button is Fubar'd by going to settings -> General -> Reset (at the bottom) and then reset the Network Settings. It isn't obvious in this post, but that is the way it works on iPhone 3G with 4.2.
