apologies if this isn't a good place to ask this, but i'm trying to track a stolen laptop (i was robbed Sad ). whoever has it is logging onto my AIM and chatting with my friends. the police haven't been helpful and just said for me to contact AOL, though they'd "put it in the report".

my friends know what's going on and have been continuing the conversation with "me" to buy time while we figure out if there's any way to track this person down. i'm putting an ip tracker into a dummy myspace account that we're going to try to get the imposter to hit. but even then, will there be any useful info? thank you so much for any help and advice. it sucks to have your stuff stolen... but it kills to have it be your laptop!

Without any stolen laptop tracking system or software installed, it can't be tracked, so it might be time to go shopping for a new one.

Re: tracking a stolen laptop
i just jumped into this topic; but the first thing you should always do is record down your computers MAC (Media access control ) address since this is unique to every computer, and how ever what flushing technology robbers use, they can never flash a mac, then am doing a research on internet enabled mac search software, so that any time your offenders connect to the internet, you get a log emailed to you.... but with out a record of your mac or any tracking system installed, say bye to a stolen laptop very important Always take note of your computers; make model serial mac and IMEI if any GSM or similar internal communication system is installed

i'm pretty sure you can spoof your mac address... i used to spoof a registered computer's mac to access my college's wifi after I graduated and my account lapsed.

You should change all of your online passwords NOWWWW!
Unless you previously installed some kind of tracking software/system, I dont think the police are going to be able to do a thing for you.

? from Revival First of all I never keep my passswords on autofill and always log out. The cell number i got is from verison so it can be tracked. I just got out of a coma and am thinking about filling a report. The police better catch them before I do. I will pay any amont of money to find them. They injected me with a narcatic and min latter i startaed to have breathing problems, then i could not breath at all. I was still awere of my seroundings, watching them steel money from my wallet that was in my back pocket and meds in my pants. Thats wghen my female friend walked in. I deeling with some bad people. Before i file a report I will change my address to a fake one to prevent my family from getting hurt. Then IT GAME TIME> I will if its the last thing i do get them. The police are a joke. What would you do. I would realy like to here back from you Thanks Revival

Re: tracking a stolen laptop

If you go to those sites, login, change your passwords, and then manually log out (as in click the sign out button), that should log you out of all locations...

Someone correct me if I'm wrong?

Edit: You may also want to personally contact all companies that deal with personal and financial information (ie: banks, paypal, etc) that you stay logged into, and simply notify them that your accounts may be jeopardized due to what happened.

done that but I do not know what to do about the 4,000 dollar paypal balance that just seemed to dissappear.

Re: tracking a stolen laptop
Paypal is the worse when it comes to this. I had something like this happen but I noticed it while it was in the progess of paying out so I called Paypal to tell them that is wasn't me who authorize it. They said they couldn't do anything about it and it was too late. I had to contact my bank and they got my money back. I closed my paypal account after that.

Re: tracking a stolen laptop

You're paypal will log all transactions, incoming and outgoing... you should be able to see some sort of indication as to what happened to your balance. You need to contact them... if you go HERE, and then look on the left side, and see a block that says Report A Problem, and click the 'Start an unauthorized transaction claim', go from there.

Not as far as I know, unless you installed some sort of tracking system on it before it went missing..

Re: tracking a stolen laptop

i had my laptop stolen by my neighbors who broke into my house. she waited until her brother(one of my friends) moved away to take it out and start using it,before that she was a "24/7" mother who didnnt have time to use laptops..(thats what she told me anyways). shes using it right now. i want to know how to prove it. i have no tracking device loaded on it because i live in the middle of nowhere not expecting my neighbours to break in at 6:30 in the morning. oh and another thing, the place my neighbors live in is my boyfriends parents place their renting to them. can't do anything about getting in there to find out either....crackhead neighbors.

Re: tracking a stolen laptop

Find your receipt/invoice for the laptop which should have the serial number on it.. File a report with the police -have them match the serial number on it.

If you havent done anything in advance of it being stolen such as putting on tracking-software, it's too late for that.

Stolen Laptop: Need help myself too

I had my laptop stolen as well, and they have logged onto my AIM since day 1 of the robbery (which was last July!) Is there any way to track them if they do not respond to any IMs sent to them? And I do not have any tracking software installed either Shock( I appreciate any help!

Re: Stolen Laptop: Need help myself too

Maybe one day they will pawn it at a pawn/loan shop, but since they have had it since last july it doesn't sound like they are in need of making money off of it.

But, you should go ahead and make a police report and report it to pawn shops just in case.  And check with local used computer stores. Even though they may still have your computer--one day they may try to sell it. (hopefully you have your seriel number--you can obtain it by having the receipt or  contacting where you bought it). Also notify the manuafacturer since the thief may get it repaired.

I wonder if there is a way to place a tracker into an IM?

I did some additional reading about stolen laptops today, but didn't really come up with anything new. I did read something about tracing it back to the mac address unless the theif has replaced the network card. The mac address won't be visible if they are behind a firewall or router. But the details were sketchy and not detailed. There are lots of articles on the web about missing laptops. And maybe someone else here has some ideas. Good luck.

Re: tracking a stolen laptop

I have some non-tech advice for you that I hope will help. Over the years I have always heard that most robberies are committed by someone the victim knows. (Of course I am not trying to sound rude or put down any people you know.) Because it could have very well been a stranger who stole it or someone who knows your routine. Or maybe a friend of a friend.

But my suggestion here is that you only let a few people (that you trust 110%) become aware of your exact ideas of how you are going to get it back. You just never know who you could be tipping off about your ideas. I hope that you don't become suspicious or accussive against the wrong person or group. It would be a big bummer to lose your laptop along with a few people or friends that you have in your life.

**By the way, the person is obviously not "computer smart" since they are taking a risk by interacting on your laptop with people you know, because it leaves a trail to them. That makes me think even more that they know you somehow because if they didn't know you then they would be least likely to be interacting--due to the common fear of not knowing you and not knowing if you have high tech capabilities of tracking them. And they are probably totally unaware of all the ideas that were mentioned to you here in other posts if they don't know much about computers.

What it all boils down to is that this person doesn't appear to be "computer smart" as I mentioned. So, maybe you can use that in your favor. Use a scare tactic that will cause them to give it back...For example, such as leaving a message to them that you have located where the laptop is from a custom gps device and they have a certain amount of time to return it to a "such and such" location before the police take action. And that there will be no charges filed if it's returned in good condition. (You certainly don't want to them to dump in a dumpster out of fear). I have never heard of gps used for computers, but they may fall for it.

Well I hope this helps. This is just my opinion and I could be totally off track and wrong, but I just felt compelled to suggest this to you. Good luck.
