I've been getting the following 0x80240016 error on Windows Defender for about some time now.

Hi, RainOnaPond. I read through this website, and found other users that solved the problem you have...

You might just want to dump Windows Defender and replace it with Microsoft Security Essentials.

Re: Windows Defender Update Error 0x80240016

I could be several things, and even varies depending on your OS version.

The actual internal error stands for
"WU_E_INSTALL_NOT_ALLOWED
Operation tried to install while another installation was in progress or the system was pending a mandatory restart."

Which means that it could have tried to install while other updates or programs were waiting for their turn. Other Windows Updates could have been running and blocked Defender from connecting properly.

Other things that can block Updates are IE plugins, like Myspace messenger or Skype. Also programs that monitor internet activity, like PC Tools Guard, Norton, or even the built in Windows monitor can stop updates. Thats the the annoying "something is trying to use the internet... do you want to unblock or keep blocking?" option.

If it still doesn't work, you can go directly to the site, download the updates and do them manually, or try a fresh install of Defender.
