3 crashed hard drives in less then 1 year

I believe I have been blessed with techonogy meltdown.  First, my husbands brand new PC's hardrive crashed, sent it into www.drivesavers.com then his external HD crashed within 3 weeks later.  And now my MAC's HD crashed!  All within this last 6 months!

I dont want to spend yet another 2K on getting my data back if I dont have to.  Does anyone know if I re-install my startup disk if all my data will be saved or will it be erased?

If your startup disk is a "Windows" disk, and not a "recovery" disk, you *should* be able to to a repair without losing your data - but be VERY CAREFUL, meaning be sure to READ all the prompts and instructions as you go along - you should see warnings if data will be overwritten. Remember, if you have a "recovery" disk, it's purpose is to do a full wipe & reinstall - meaning, no data saved.

And.. if everyone had good backups, Drivesavers would go out of business.

*EDIT: 3 drives crashed in such a short period is either a case of extreme statistical grouping (you should play the lotto!) OR some other external influences such as bad power.. might want to look into a power conditioner or a high-quality UPS.

Thanks!  Im not sure what the disk is for my Mac. I have to actually have to dig under the stairs to find the comptuer box with the disk in it.  The lucky thing is that we have 6 other computers, so I can actually use another computer, but it just sucks that all my data that I had is on an unusable compter at the moment.

We were backing up, after our first problem onto the external HD untill that one crashed.

I will probably just send it to drivesavers so I dont eff my data up.  so I will be without a mac for a while till I can get the extra money!  It is darned expensive!  I could buy another computer for the amount that is spent on saving my data!

Ohh Geeze - you were talking about your Mac, and i was replying about Windows. THere are some recovery options on your Mac OS X disk - but (fortunately) i have never had to use them so i'm not sure how they work.

:)  I feel like I need to just forget about storing anything onto any eletronical device.  Im going back to pre-computer age!  Keep every little piece of paper, and store all photo's in actual albums.

you could try an online backup

I know someone who uses http://mozy.com/ and he seems happy with it.

I def. second the idea of online backup - your backups should be in two or more places - and an online backup is a great 2nd place. A great one for your Mac is MobileMe. it costs a bit more, but also gives you a lot more than just backups. Carbonite is also another decent one. If you're more techy, and dont mind tinkering, you can do it for real-cheap or free with services like DropBox..
