404 adware - i need it removed! HOW?

hi, i have a problem with my internet browser (both IE6, IE7, and Firefox..whatever the latest version is). this is the problem... everytime that i misspell a URL or spell .COM as .CMO or just something dumb like that, instead of bringing up a "page cannot be found" page, i get some porn page. i really want this removed and quick. i've tried searching and deleting adware with different programs, but it did seem to work. please help me with this problem!

I would install and run HijackThis.  This is not a typical adware removal program.  Do NOT have it "fix" any items in the scan list unless you know for a fact that it is the culprit.  Most all things in this list are needed.  Take your time and research each line of your scan results.  In most cases you can 'select' the line and click "Info on selected item..." and find out what program is responsible.  Don't check any tic boxes unless you want the line gone.  If you are not sure, DON'T 'fix' anything.

If you would like, you can copy your log file in this thread and we'll have a look at it to see if there is anything that stands out in your list.

Again.. don't 'fix' anything unless you are sure that it is the culprit.

I like HijackThis, but that is definitely an intense way to go, particularly for someone not familiar with processes. I agree with the note of caution.

Could you tell me exactly what your scanners are finding? Name and filepath?

In the meantime, Ryan will just need to be careful to spell URL's correctly. Cool

Spybot S&D works wonders for all computers on my home network. But, like HijackThis, it's a powerful program and should be used with caution as Ashton (love that name) mentions above. :)

Alright, I scanned my computer with Ad-Adware SE and this is the logfile i got. I hope this helps solve my problem! Ad-Aware SE Build 1.06r1 Logfile Created on:Monday, February 19, 2007 9:42:50 PM Created with Ad-Aware SE Personal, free for private use. Using definitions file:SE1R152 13.02.2007

Hi there Wintallo - I edited this post as it was a little personal concerning your surfing habits through the cookies displayed (not bad though). I have a copy of your scan and am looking it over. - Ashton

OK I see 3 things in there. Let Ashton take a look, as well and see if he agrees with me and can find others. Here's what I saw that I would "fix":

    • search assistant\acmru
    • contentmatch.net\ny
    • istbar

After we get this fixed, you should probably edit your post to delete the log file

Stevie is right,

The three he stated are your problems. The programs are toolbars that "hook" into the Internet Explorer toolbar and either permanently save your surfing information or act as a browser hijacker and lead you to the offending sites.

Your main problem is the istbar. I'm willing to bet there is a good chance that AdAware was able to take care of the others...but you can never be sure.

First download the removal tool in the link and save it on your desktop or a place where you can find it..don't run it.

http://sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/adware.istbar.html

Boot into safe mode.

Run the removal tool

Run AdAware

Be sure to actually "quarantine" the files found (I'm sure you are;-). You'll probably run into a few temp files associated with istbar as the removal tool doesn't deal with those.

Boot back into normal Windows mode and run the AdAware scan again. List any problems not dealing with cookies or MRU's (Most Recently Used).

Hope it helps.

Download BHO Demon and run it. It will tell you what kind of browser helper objects that you have. It will get rid of the objects that you do not want.

Alright, I installed the uninstaller, booted up in Safe Mode, ran the uninstaller...but the uninstaller didn't finish. It came up (both times I tried) with an "Error. This program has encountered a problem and must shut down. We are sorry for the inconvenience. blah blah blah..." Any advice? I scanned with my Ad-Aware SE but it says it's still there.
