All I want to be is a quitter

I have just sat down and figured out over the last 8 years I have spent over $16,600.00 on cigarettes.

How to quit? I have tried patches, gum, medication. I have tried to only allow myself 3 cigarettes a day which turned into just one more. Then before I knew it I was smoking a pack again. I have smoked the cost of a home down payment. How horrifying is that? I have smoked clove cigarettes for 7 of those 8 years. I was hoping that maybe some fellow geek friends can share with me some ways that they quit. I really need to quit. I am a mom of 4 kids and I don't want my kids to lose their mom to an illness caused by silly things I selfishly pay for.  help!!

Foxfire, kudos to you, and that is a huge accomplishment! Way to go! julie

Yeah, I just think you gotta be 100% into quiting, otherwise you are never going to succeed. It was afull time job for me. I still think it would be nice, but then I think of cancer, and my family is flled with it. So it goes to show what you really want

Will power is everything when it comes to smoking there were times when it was very trying but with lots of encouragement from my wife and the occasional homicide *Snickers* i eventually made it .

Wow! Took the hard road and still nine weeks? Congratulations!

I smoked for 18 YEARS as a true nicotine addict.  A serious addict.  I quit in 1995 using the patch and haven't smoked since.  I made a web page a few years ago that according to feedback has helped quite a few people.  The last update I did was done when Chantix was new... I need to do some research on how well it's doing.

Anyway.. here's the page I wrote:
http://www.glowingtubes.com/p/Stop_Smoking.htm

i've only heard good things about chantix, and the doc should have a $10.00 coupon to use with the script. i do have kind of a funny little story about quitting, tho.
you guys have seen those ads that say they can cure any addiction...tobacco, food, alcohol, drugs...by doing a group hypnosis. they used to charge $75.00, i don't know what it is now. so, one day i thought it sounded like a great idea, and i could dispel all my vices at the same time, kinda like a buy one, get one type of deal. i asked my better half to go with me for moral surport, and reluctantly he agreed. He belly ached and he moaned, "he wasn't quitting smoking", "he'd quit when he wanted to", i'm tellin' ya, by the time it got to be quit night, i was so sorry that i had even told him about it, never mind asked him to go with me!!!
so we get to the almost filled convention, and we all go thru this state of deep relaxation, and we're told of the perils of tobacco, and how rats crap in tobacco leaves, blah, blah, blah-de dah. all the while we're told to rub our thumb and forefinger together in a circular motion, and they pass around a garbage bag and suggest everyone throw their cigs away, FOREVER! After this symbolic purge we go on our merry way, and my husband hasn't had a cigarette since. 20+ years, and he hasn't had a drag. still rubbin' his fingers together, tho. go figure... julie

This may sound weird but I heard celery helps. Something about fiberous (sp?) foods helped alleviate the craving. That was probably some hippie nonsense.

I did the needle thing.  And it worked.  For the life of me, I can't think of what it is really called. Oh my.

Okay, got it, acupuncture.   Worked for many years, but a few years back, I restarted, so bad me.

I hope you get through this.  Your willpower to achieve it will also help with the physical help that is available.  For me, it would take both.

I am sure that soon enough, I will have realized my mistake of restarting and I'll be looking into the sites and remedies mentioned above.  Actually, I already realize it, but that's as far as I've taken it so far.

Wishing you the best Miss Green.

One of my parents quit smoking cold turkey almost two decades ago. They give the thanks to Prayer that has allowed them to stay off the cigarettes. Also, the laser treatment samantha mentioned sounds like a good idea.

But, you can only quit when you truly want to and actually do it. Even if you tell yourself you need to quit, and that you should quit, and that you are going to quit...it will never happen until you truly just do it.

It is indeed the hardest addiction to quit, Prayer can move mountains though

Quitting anything that is an addictin is always hard im not even going to lie. I have sucessfully quit many of my addiction such as morphine and alcohol. It was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life to change my lifestlye. If you want to quit you have to want it. I mean REALLY WANT IT. Dont say im going to try to quit Say I WILL. Think about the people you may hurt if you dont. YOUR KIDS. Would you want them to grow up with out a mother because of your selfish choices? Im one of those people who believe taking drugs or going to doctor isnt a way to do it but to believe in yourself is the way to go. Self discipline will get you farher than you think.
good luck sweetie

Seems like it's my turn to say some prayers for YOU. Take gentle care. You can do it.

Count me part of that club too, Green

Bad, Bad, Bad...

But, I sure do enjoy it;-)

I just wanted to mention that cloves are notorious for introducing small particulates that can cut up your lungs. I gave them up because of this.

Green my father has been a smoker for close to 35 years he went in July for laser treatment. Has not had a cigarette since. He had paid about $200 and the treatment took 20 minutes. I would highly recommend this. I've included a couple of sites but google it too and see what you come up with. I hope you kick that habit!!

after my sister and i repeatedly threw my mom's cigarettes down the toilet she finally upped and quit one day....cold turkey...it's been over twenty years and she hasn't started the habit back up again....

....have you just tried quitting cold turkey?...like everything you have to take it one day at a time...believe me i know its hard...i'm trying to lose weight and it's the same thing....taking it one day at a time....

Go to see your doctor and ask for Chantix. Google it too. It's supposed to be amazing.

Hey Green, I am dealing with the same problem!! and I get hospitalized more and more often because I smoke and excacerbate the heart diseases and the other systemic diseases that I already have. How stupid is that!??!! I have quit 20 + years of heroin, even more years of alcohol, but I cannot quit these freakin cigarettes! I have often heard cocaine called the devil's drug....un-uh, definitely tobacco! Now, it seems that there is a miracle drug on the horizon...p has named it in his post...Chantix. This past stint in the big house(hospital), I talked to a nurse who has just used it to quit. She had 32 days when we spoke. Pretty good, I'd say, and this is coming from the future poster lady for easy ways to smoke thru a tracheostomy. It's about 150.00 for a month's worth, but for me, it still averages out cheaper. I'll keep you posted if I get a script, and if you could do the same it would be much appreciated! juliek
