Tipping is not the name of a town in China.

Ok so this is my first blog here on GuG, being a tattoo artist I thought I'd start out with what I know about best, poking people for money! ;) haha.
Last night I did a tattoo on my husband Atom, it's an ambigram of his daughters name, Addison . In this case if you turn it upside down it reads the same word again, Addison.
So maybe I should start out with some basics for people out there considering getting some ink work done. First never get a tattoo while your intoxicated, or talked into it by a group of friends, I cover these up all the time, so I guess I'm trying to say, it is permanent so think about it for a while. What's a few months deciding something that lasts a life time?
When your absolutely sure you want to get a piece done, feel free to go to the shop and look at the flash art (the predrawn pics they have hanging up) and talk to the artists. They should be friendly and able to show you portfolio's of their work , and answer any questions you have. If someone seems too busy to talk to you, or acts like if you not getting a tattoo right now they have better things to do, I recommend going else where. Part of tattooing is talking about tattoos, which you may not get paid for, but it helps bring in future business, and helps people feel comfortable and have a good experience.
A few thing that are very important health issues you definately want to check when you are actually going to get a tattoo are:
1. make sure the needle is packaged and sealed, all hospital grade sterilization wrapping will have some type of indicator that says, when this package has been sterilized this bar will change from green to brown. so you want to make sure and check that, just ask to see the needle before it is opened.
2. check that a new clean set up is put down, a sterile disposable pad on the work surface, new ink caps and fresh ink, plastic bags covering the machine, and bottles to be touched while tattooing.
A few more things that will make your experience a little more comfortable,
Eat something at least hour before your get tattooed, if your blood sugar is low you can start to feel dizzy or sick, so have a snack people :P
Don't drink, it doesn't lessen the pain, and when the buzz wears off you'll probly feel even worse.
Read the title of this blog, my uncle (who also does ink) gave me that sticker, which is hanging in my shop, it's just courtesy, a good artist is putting a piece of art that is just for you, I feel like if you think the person did an excellent job, give them a little extra, it doesn't have to be 50 bucks, hey 10 shows you appreciate them.

Well i don't want to scare people away from tattoos, If thought out and meaningful they are beautiful pieces of art to be treasured for a life time. Just be informed and don't be afraid to ask questions. :)

i always wanted a tatoo of a big tiger on my back....unfortunately when i first decided to do that i was in the military and since it would show on parts of my neck, it was a nogo.....my brother does tatoo work and said he would do one for me but now i don't want the tiger anymore....the ambigram idea sounds nice....you must be really good because you have to be for those to come out the way they're supposed to....how long have you been doing tatoos?

There still aloud to get tattoos, just no big ones one the lower part of the arm where they can be seen. I've heard that the Marines were all rushing out to get them before the deadline hit.

For six days I lived off of scrambled eggs with cheese they made it soupy. It was horrible but worth it in the end. Everybody laughed at me to because they were eating steak, and shrimp and all those good meats. lol

I got my first tattoo about 7 years ago of a small full Blue Moon with my name in Kanji thru the middle of it. I always new that I wanted to add onto it, but I was really never sure what it was until now.

So I decided to go with one of Amy Brown's Bubble fairies to surround it. It took awhile but I wanted something that I knew I really wanted. I'm picky, as well I should be because it's something that will always last....

Thanks for the info thou tattodles! Because my cousin lives in Florida & were getting them next month while I am visiting her down there. So I won;t be in my hometown where everyone knows which tattoo artist to go to....

That reminds me of my daughter and her tongue piercing a while ago. She lived on ramen noodles for days. The funny thing was the noodles kept getting tangled around the bar! I tried not to laugh because I knew she was in pain but it was just too funny!

Depends on where you have it done. Bony areas hurt more because there are no fat pads underneath. The one on the back of my neck was tolerable until he got to a bony part. Then it was a little like what being on fire might feel like! Luckily it didn't last too long. And you can always ask them to stop for a second. It also depends on your pain threshhold. No one can tell you how much it will hurt YOU, in reality.

thats sounds awsome! make sure you ask around for someone sho specializes in portraits , and ask to see some of their previous work :)

Someone told me today the Marines are changing their standards to no tattoos below the elbows or knees. Haha. Marines without tattoos?

HAHAHAHAHA! "Man Meat" How freakin hilarious! Laughing

My first musing when checking on the man meat, was: do ya think he gets razor bumps there?

hahaha strangely enough the tattoos aren't what i noticed first, it was like nice area of man meat right above the belt......... ;)  :O

Hell holds a special place for guys like that tattooist with Hep, if he was infecting other folks intentionally.

Hi tatt! Thanks for this awesome blog!

Back when I was 29 I did consider getting a tattoo, but chickened out mostly because I couldn't decide between getting a tattoo of an octopus holding a dive flag, or some form of the pisces symbol between my shoulder-blades. I felt too indecisive about such a commitment, so I didn't do it.

One of my brothers, on the other hand, designs tattoos and is very good at it. His specialty are tear-aways! Some of them look very gnarly.

My favorite tattoos to look at belong to this guy....

People don't think about the consequences until it happens. My hubbys friends have went to some shops in Chicago and Northwest Indiana and they were really cheap about 10 bucks. One friend had his stuff infected another said he wanted the letters m.o.b. and the artist put m.u.d. lol I know its not funny but these dummies went there when my hubby said your being to cheap. He goes to one guy only. Which does great tats and is reasonable.

the story is awful for those unfortunates, but thanks for posting it, people should be very careful about tattoo's, bleach doesn't cut it you need autoclave sterilization for tubes, and single use needles.

i obviously don't want to scare people away from tattoos, i just want people to be informed. don't ever get a tattoo from some guy with a sketchy set up, is a cheap tattoo worth a disease?

I was doing security at a major festival once (I wont mention which one), and we had a report that a tattoo artist was doing tattoo's for donations...

and that he was only sterilizing his needles in bleach.

When we went to go shut him down, he was wearing dark sunglasses. An EMT advised that we take a look at his eyes, and sure enough when we looked...they were yellow around his pupils (hepatitis).

This was awhile ago, but to this day I wonder how many people might have been affected by that.

Sorry for the awful story, but I'm sure there is a moral there.

Thanks tat. I was thinking about getting my 3 kids faces on my back. I don't know exactly what else but i have do time to figure it out. My hubby says doesn't hurt that bad but can't explain the pain.

hey samantha, well thats a hard question to answer as everybody has a different tollerance for pain. im not going to lie and say it doesn't hurt, because you are poking you skin with needles. i usually tell people it feels like a hot stinging, but its not unbearable, and in my opinion, a little mild pain is worth the result.

some places on your body are more painful than others, where you have alot of nerve bundles, ie. your stomach, ribs, lower back, feet. just think of your tickle spots. these area's quite honestly most people find very painful to have tattooed, arms, thighs, upper back,  are good places if your a little afraid of the pain, or u just know u don't take pain well.

well a tongue piercing is a little painful, though it's with mine it was the soreness the next day that hurt. everybody heals differently its true, but it should take no more than a week for the swelling to go down. also suck on ice cubes or a popsicle and take ibubrofen as both are anti-inflamitory.

as for just personal point of view, i loved mine. (used to have alot of piercings but i have taken most out). it was fun to have and a little naughty to show off, u do have to stick your tongue out at people :P

maybe my next post will be about piercings :)

animestrinity I got my tongue pierced 4 years ago. When I first got it done it hurt like hell. My tongue was swollen for about 6 days. I ate a lot of soup and I just used a lot of mouth wash to keep my mouth clean. It was worth it. Everybody's tongue heals differently. My friend she healed in 3 days. but I'm sure tattoodles will give u some great points since she's talking to a professional.
Tattoodles I have a question how bad is the pain when getting a tattoo? I really want to get one but I'm scared it hurts to much. lol

My question for piercings is... what do you know about tongue piercing... from the point of view of people who have gotten it done?

and my fave tats:

Blonde is a state of mind... or lack thereof...

I can attest to Tat giving advice on piercings!!!  As she gave me some just the other day.  I didn't want to walk into my local tattoo shop and look like an idiot asking a question, so I contacted Tat!  She gave me great advice...

BTW, Tat, I'm about ready to take a drive to Va beach so I can have someone that actually knows what they're talking about to help me w/ little nose piercing.  It's getting very aggravating not being able to take this out myself.  I guess I should have done more research before I had it done.  And honestly, I can't remember the guys in the shop giving me any other instructions other than a pamphlet on the basics.

So thanks again for all your help!

The truth has no deadline...Oskar Schindler

we do piercings at the shop, but i don't do them myself, though i can answer most questions about them, as i constantly watch my piercer and ask him things. and if i don't know, i can always ask him and get back on it. :)

my love of tatts started with a man too, lol, when i was 13 i saw a pantera video and thought phil anselmo was a hot rock star god, :P i remember my mom said, "you don't want to like boys like that with all those tattoos!"

 little did she know........

I've always loved tattoos... but I know I'll never get one. I prefer my own body to be completely mark free.... but I love looking at tattoos on other people... especially Josh Todd's back and arms.... gives me chills every time

So do you do piercings to?

Blonde is a state of mind... or lack thereof...

I turn 30 in early May, I've been thinking of getting my first tattoo as a birthday present / midlife crisis present for myself. So I can definitely say that I put some thought into it, and didn't get one as a trendy drunken mistake of my youth. The trendiness of the whole thing is one reason I haven't gone and done it yet. I'm still kinda kicking around the idea of how much I want one.

I know some people who just get seemingly random stuff put in seemingly random places. In the end it just looks like a big mess.

The name on your husband's arm is pretty damn nifty looking. I am mostly interested in getting letters, symbols, or simple pictures, all in black.

Any other smart tattoo advice you want to include in a future blog would be appreciated and interesting to read!

nice japanese style sleeve. i agree with the age thing, i had a few i had to get covered up that i got when i just turned 18 lol :) but hey i can't say i don't love all those young sailor boys who come into get tattooed, thats half my buisness! :P

I tip my dude every time. He's a friend and does it on the cheap but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate what he does. I know of too many sketchy tattoo stories. The guy who did my first tattoo started while locked up. Haha. He could do good tattoos, I just always asked for terrible ones. Which brings me to my theory that the legal age should be raised to 25 years old or at least as it applied to me.

"I'm just like you only shorter."

I actually have this on the back of my neck:

My daughters and I went together to get this one for the symbolism that the dragonfly represents to us. It was a cool way to bond, so to speak. Painful, but cool. My daughter is going to add to it for me as soon as she can. I'd like to have the dragonfly sitting on a vine somehow. She's a really good artist so I know she'll have some great ideas for me when the time comes. She's busy, and that's good, but it means Mom takes a back seat and that's NOT good. ;-)
