UGH!

There is NOTHING that upsets me more than racism and stereotyping. It bugs me that some people in this country have the misconception that all hispanics are criminals and drug dealers. Let me tell you something for those of you who think that way, the reason why immigrants migrate to the U.S is for freedom and to live a better life. Hispanics are not the only ones who come to this country legally or non-illegally, There is also Asians, Canadians, Russians, etc.  Oh, and not all hispanics are MEXICAN, they are also Puerto Ricans, Salvadoreans, Chileans, Colombians, Peruanos, Cubans, etc.  Yes there may be some Hispanic criminals unfortunately that taint our heritage, but there are also White/Caucasian criminals, African American criminals, Asian criminals, etc. BUT, for some reason some people in this country only like to point out the Hispanic criminals, they point out all criminals of course, but really highlight the Hispanic culture. What about all of the good things Hispanics and other minorites have done for this country? Like cleaning up after you have a wonderful dinner at your favorite restaurant, or risking their lives building highways and take care of the majority of the construction here in the U.S. , who do you think keeps up your neighborhood, or picks up the trash on the streets, clean your home, kill themselves picking the produce in the HOT sun we consume everyday, etc. I have NEVER in my life seen a Hispanic bum, ever! If you see them on the entrance of freeways they are selling something to make money, not just sit there with a sign stating "Please help me with some money, God Bless you."  Ok, you have a SSN and are a citizen of the United States, work for you money like everyone else! I refuse to give bums money because not only are they legal to work here they want the money for drugs, ugh! Now if they're selling something I wouldn't mind helping out and buying something from them, but just give them money because they're being lazy bums?? heck no! I really don't care why they're bumming it on the street, everybody makes decisions everyday, and they chose to be bums so I DO NOT feel bad for them. Ok, now I'm just ranting, and what brought me to write this is that the other day my sister-in-law and my cousin went to the grocery store, they were speaking in Spanish, and the cashier asks, "Are you speaking Mexican?" How IGNORANT is she!! Speaking Mexican??! B!tc% please! It is Spanish, and not only Mexicans speak Spanish, so does the reast of Latin America! My sis-in-law responded, "NO, I'm speaking SPANISH." The cashier just stood there looking stupid and said, "oh". If I was there I would have gone off on her. Anyways, we are ALL stereotyped into a certain race, size, color, class, etc. Now this bolg is NOT meant to offend anyone, it's just me speaking my mind as always and I was going to blow up soon if I didn't write about it, and I know you all are MATURE individuals who can read this and not take it offensively. How do you feel when you're being stereotyped? You can obviously tell that I get very very disturbed by racism towards any gender, race, color, even if it's not my own. I'm a very diverse individual and try to look at the better picture, ALWAYS.

Agreed.  There is a difference between a Castilian accent and others, as well as difference in word usage but, all in all, we all understand each other.  Although, I won't lie, there are plenty of times when I have to ask what a certain Mexican word, or Dominican word etc., means.  Because it's different than one I would use for the same subject.

"Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect."

There is a difference in some words but it's pretty much the same. We just have different slang. Like for example in Puerto Rico they call corn "maiz" and in Mexico we say "elote" however both words are understood in each country. In the end Spanish is Spanish and whether a Hispanic goes to Panama, Spain, Mexico, or Cuba it is all understood.

I don't mean to sound like a moron here ;), but I have actually been told by a few Mexican friends that there is a difference in the Spanish language. Aside from just subtle differences in dialect (as in the difference between Boston English, and, those southern drawls of the south, or Northern accents), there are some bigger differences. Like the differences between American English and real English from England, I've been told there is Spanish (from Spain) and "Mexican-Spanish".

I have even copy/pasted something a Mexican friend said in Spanish to me once, to a multi-national forum asking someone to translate it, and they right away told me that it was probably someone who was Mexican who typed it. To me, since I don't really speak Spanish, it obviously all looks/sounds the same. ;)

Also, when I went to grab a copy of Rosetta Stone, to learn some Spanish, they have 2 options to get, Spain Spanish and Latin-American Spanish, so I grabbed the Latin American Spanish.

Someone who knows better than me on this subject, help me clear this up, so I don't accidentally have someone go off on me if I ask the wrong question sometime, please ? :)

Yeah I hate when people use the term Spanish to define all Hispanics/Latinos.

Someone asks me, "Oh, are you Spanish?"
I say, "No, I'm Puerto Rican."
"Oh well isn't that the same thing?"
"NO, it's not. Spanish people are from spain. Puerto Ricans speak Spanish. Big difference, moron!"

You're upsetting me....on several levels.

See, that has happened to me too. I also am very fair skinned like my mother, when I go to Mexico they call me "gringa", lol, go figure, people never make up their minds.

Stereotyping anyone is the worst.  I've been told that I'm not "Spanish enough".  Now, I ask you, what exactly does that mean?  Worst part is it was by a hispanic person.  Unreal.  Apparently, my choice in music, my hippie attitude, the way I dress (what did she say?  oh- "like some white girl from one of those fashion magazines"), the way I speak (I may play around here when I post but I actually do speak like an educated grownup in real life lol), hell even the fact that I am very fair skinned, isn't Spanish enough.  To which I responded (in verbatim I kid you not)- "First of all, I think what you are trying to say is- I'm not 'Hispanic' enough you ignorant twit.  Secondly, you can't define someone's ethnicity by the jeans they choose to buy or the music stored in their ipod.   Nor should you base your opinions of what a Hispanic person "should" be on your own personal choices and philospophies.  Perhaps you should take a look at whether you are "intelligent" enough to even engage in a conversation of this measure.  I personally think that you are not so I will be merciful and walk away now."

Ugh.  Takes a lot to make this little tree hugger unmellow, man.  Lol.  That comment sure did a good job of it though, obviously.  She's never said anything near that ridiculous to me again.

See I live in Arizona, where all of the alien busts are taking place and it's all over the news, this girl KNEW it was Spanish, again, I live in ARIZONA, and there is hispanics EVERYWHERE! But I get what you're saying, and I don't let it ruin my day, it just pisses me off, it's diff. looking at something from the outside looking in then actually experiencing racism, trust me, I've been called a wetback and I was born in CALIFORNIA!!! (Which by the way was originally Mexico.)

I've lived in New York my whole life, so I'm used to every kind of person being around. It would be really weird to be in a place where everyone looks the same. You can't expect racism to go away from this country or any other, its in some people's nature to hate for any reason they can think of. But I do think by and large people arent like that anymore. Sure you can point out cases of racism, but I think your average everyday person doesn't harbor any real hate toward anyone else based on skin color alone. Also I dont think stereotyping is really the same thing as hatred in most cases.....Like whoever asked if you were speaking mexican probably doesn't hate hispanics, but just doesn't know that the language is called spanish(which is actually one of the dumbest things I've heard all week). I jazz my friends about their race sometimes too when we're joking around, its not a big deal because we know each other and its important to be able to laugh at yourself and who or what you are. Sterotypes can be funny....who doesn't love comedy sketches about the drunk Irish, the indian with the funny voice or the countless others. You just gotta let stupid things like that roll off your shoulder and dont let it ruin your day, do you really care what people you dont know think anyway?

Now that you mention it , I dont think I've ever seen a hispanic bum either. Now you'll have me looking closely whenever I see one, thanks a lot.

Sad...I don't think it will ever end. But i absolutely feel where you're coming from. Being black...i know it all too well. Some people are just ignorant and i really can't understand why....There is just a lack of knowledge...when you know better, you do better. Unless your just plain hateful =(

I know exactly what you mean. I wish we had some type of Hispanic  Immigrant (ALL RACES)pep talks in different cities so our people could stop giving in to these stereotypes and myths. A lot has to do with them wanting the "American Dream" but are not educated on things. I talk to clients everyday, among those Hispanics, and they get credit cards not knowing what a APR is or getting an ARM (adjustable Rate Mortgage) and not even realizing that their mortgage will go up in a couple of years or giving out their entire SSN without a question, etc. I wish I could start some type of organization to educate ALL immigrants on being smart as far as how to "survive" in the U.S. without getting in trouble, whether that trouble is financial, criminal, emotional, etc.  kind of trouble. There's so many mean people out there that will take advantage of un-educated people, and it's very sad.

racsim exists, unfortunately. in my home, family, life we practice one thing: Love Has No Color.

Tuna ><(((( '> the other white meat! I am Keeper Of The Whip!

Yes I know exactly what you mean. I'm actually glad someone has brough it up. When I was living in Florida, I got tired of people asking me if I speak Puerto Rican. I always told them, No and I don't think anyone does speak Puerto Rican being that its a nationality and not a language. I also got tired of people asking me if I was here legally. Yes you dumb f&#ks! Puerto Ricans are born American Citizens. I'm also tired of seeing my own people give in to the stereo types and worsening the myths.
