Can I install Chrome OS on an old Windows laptop?

I have an old IBM Thinkpad that I want to turn into a Chromebook. It has Windows 7 on it but i’m sick of Windows and want to try something else. Linux is too confusing but Chrome OS looks pretty simple and should do everything I need which is mostly just web browsing and email so I want to turn this Thinkpad into a Chromebook but I can’t find out where to get the Chrome operating system. I thought it was free but is it only free if I buy a real “Chromebook” ?

I did the exact same thing not long ago with an old laptop that was too slow to run Windows (and, I hate Windows too!).. Now that i’ve turned it into a Chromebook it runs great and I have got it to do EVERYTHING I could do on Windows by installing Chrome extensions or Chrome Apps.
You can’t install the official Google ChromeOS because it is proprietary, but you can install the open source (FREE!) version of Chromium which is what the official ChromeOS is based on. It is basically ChromeOS - you can install all of the Chrome apps and extensions from the Google Chrome store and as far as I can tell it does everything that an official Chromebook can do EXCEPT for running Android Apps..
You can get the free version of Chromium, called “Cloudready” from Neverware.com .. Just go to the Cloudready / Neverware.com website and download the installer for the Chrome “Home Edition” ..
You will need to make an installer disk but their website will walk you through the process.. You then boot up your laptop on the boot disk (actually USB drive) and go through the Chromium installer.. For some reason the creating of the boot USB drive and the actual installation is REAllY slow - it took like 45 minutes. You can either make your laptop dual-boot so you can choose between Windows (if it’s there now) or Chrome each time you boot up. If you choose to go full-blown ONLY Chrome, then everything on the disk will be erased..
After the installation completes you can then go to the Chrome store to look for the apps or extensions that you need.
Dont forget that you will need a gmail/Google account to use your fancy new Chromebook !

And no need to worry about all of those windows viruses because Chrome is immune to them!!!

Correct! Another reason why “Widows sucks!” ..
BUT
Even though your Chromebook can’t get a “Windows Virus” you can still get other types of Malware if you go around installing everything you see from every shady website - ie; installing apps or extensions NOT from the Google Chrome Store..
And every once in a while a naughty app or extension makes its way into the the Chrome Store always check reviews before installing and never install something brand new or without a lot of reviews.
