Car help! Shifter light....

Okay... I have a 2004 Chevy Cavalier... it's an automatic, and the light that lights up the gears is out... I dunno how to find a replacement... or how to replace it... or even what it's called... and the warranty is long over.  Granted, I know what gear I'm in, unless I actually think about it... so the only times I don't have to turn my light on to make sure I'm in Drive instead of Reverse, is when I'm really pissed off and don't think, just go...

So does anyone have any helpful info they can give? The name of the part? How to fix it? anything?????

I don't really feel comfortable walking into an Autoshop and asking for help with my "shifty lighty thingy"... I look clueless when it comes to cars for a reason.

Help?!

OK on every Army base there is a do it yourself car shop with bays and tool rentals and those cool extra wide skateboards. Have the boyfriend take you to that shop and the men there will show your boyfriend how to fix the gear light thingie.Or you can do like my ex wife and flirt with them as they do all the work for you ;)

There in lies the problem... I don't want boyfriend to have anything to do with it.  I want to do this by myself... and without him, I don't have access to anything on any of our army bases...

Maybe I'll just rip it open and find the light myself... and hope I can put it back together.

I'm not going to be much help, but...

Did you check the fuses?

Re: Car help! Shifter light....

it is most likely a fuse or possibly a bulb--but likely the fuse.

it is very unlikely for it to be wire problem (it generally takes about 20 to 30 years for a wire problem to exist--and of course your car is an '04)

you can use a test light --there are steps included with this such as grounding (anyways this is quicker than pulling each fuse out one by one to determine which it is). Good luck :)

What's a test light?

Sorry, I'm car-dumb... I generally go to either Boyfriend, or my cousin and just give them that helpless-girly stare... but this time I want to actually fix it myself...

and fuses....... where do I find those?

and... am I going to have to take anything apart? Because I'm good at that... just not so good at the putting back together...

The fuse box is located under the driver side dash on the left hand side.
