Christmas Caroler Etiquette

My neighbor has shared w/me that in our area, Christmas Carolers will visit several times. Eeeeks! What is the appropriate etiquette for when I answer my door? Do I give them food? Money? When I was a child, this happened only one time, my father must have scared them away when he gave them fruit. Good golly.... was that a major holiday

Whatever you do... don't spray them with silly string... I learned that the hard way... evidently they don't appreciate that.

I always thought they did it for the joy of freezing their tooshies off...

Okay 2na... I'll play nice... in case you're actually concerned.. I did some snooping... and found these basic things:

1. no ignoring... be nice... smile... applaud... say thank you... possibly sing along softly (mini-2na might like that)

2. if you know them, maybe invite them in... otherwise they might be axe-murderers..

3. if you like, offer refreshments... but ask before... don't come outside with stuff and give them items they have to carry around now...

4. if you want, ask if you can join them

5. maybe take some pictures and if you know where they live, send copies of the pics... to me that sounds like a neat idea... if they're cheerful enough to go around singing in the streets, I bet they'd like pictures.

I know here, there's a group that goes around on xmas eve... but it's like a group of 50 people... I'm sorry, but I'm not making hot chocolate for 50 people...

I think another idea might be to ask a neighbor that's been there a while... that knows how to deal with them... maybe turn off all your lights and stay away from windows.. then they might not think you're home and will skip your house... or put up st. patricks day decorations... confuse them... come out with a mug of green beer in your hand... and scream the carols with them... I bet they won't stay long... :D

[/quote] I like this direction you talked about above.  Lights out.  Maybe there's a universal signal like a pair of panties hanging from the doorknob.

There's an episode of Gilmore Girls... Paris and Rory moving into an apartment in a 'bad area'... Paris has a recording on a CD of mean aggressive dogs barking, growling, and snarling that she plays to scare people off...... I think that might be a nice touch for carolers too :)

I've got a Rob Zombie CD called "Halloween Hootenanny".. Boom box on porch....  CD on repeat.... that might work.

Mama always said,.."Don't eat anything offered to you from people you don't know!"

I would just keep cookies, or other treats ready and waiting and then offer it if they would like. This seems easier than providing hot drinks. I wish we had carolers here, that sounds so christmasy!

Well, if you want to annoy them off your front stoop, you could always answer the door and immediately start belting out a rendition of this timeless classic:

"Jingle bells, Batman smells, Robin laid an egg..."

They may just leave and never come back...

"With my big black boots and an old suitcase, I do believe I'll find myself a new place..."

Some of you people need to check yourself with a mental health professional. Christmas carolers are only trying to spread the Christmas spirit to others. How in the world is this country not any crazier than it is with people so filled with sarcasm and rudeness? I sure hope you are my neighbors...I prefer more positive, polite human beings with some common courtesy. And, THANK YOU to anyone who would be kind enough to spread the spirit of Christmas in such a dark world.
