I was wondering about something I've noticed as of late. My car is only a year old and in the past month or so there's been a buildup of black residue on the muffler. I don't remember seeing this before. Why is it doing this? Is it burning oil or something? I need some guidance. It's still within warranty, but if somethings wrong I want an idea of what it is. Any help is appreciated.

Where on the muffler? do you mean on the inside of the tailpipe, the exterior, or the external "tip" ?
Black-krap buildup inside the tailpipe is normal - it's leftover from the dirty, carbon based fuel we use, but TOO MUCH buildup or in odd places might mean something is wrong. One thing to do is it let the car idol and look at the smoke coming from the tailpipe - it should be pretty-much clear.. then have someone rev the engine (make sure the car is in park/neutral and the eBrake is ON), and see if there are any puffs of black or blue smoke - that could indicate a problem..
ovrall though, buildup inside the tailpipe is normal..
do you keep regularly scheduled service appointments? if so, and the car is still under warranty, i'd take it in for a check. at very minimum, and to keep costs down, call the service department of the dealer and ask.

I haven't kept any regular service appointments. The most I've done is have the oil changed and tires rotated. The stuff is all along the bottom part of the inside of the muffler and a bit on the outside as if it was dripping out...the best way for me to put it. The car I had before this one never looked like it had as much as this one does, that's why it surprised me to see it on this one.

wet or powder/soot like? because that could be an entirely different issue if it is wet.

It's powdery/soot like, just a real thick amount of it. I wiped most of it off just to see how long it takes to build it up again.

It would be nice to know the year make and model. Some late model cars, Like my '08 Mazda 5 develope a sooty looking appearance on exhaust system parts from the catalytic converter back. My Mazda and my wife's '08 Tribeca, no were not rich her mother had to die for us to have new cars, have a black residue that trails on the underside of the tailpipe. This is all normal due to the chemical changing properties from the catalytic converter which experiences extremely high tempertures to burn off Co, Co2, and NOX.
