I have had my little Florida Kingsnake for almost a year and tonight was the first night she ever bit me... and tried to eat my finger. I know it was my fault and it makes me feel like a horrible parent.
My question to you all is: Is there anything I can do to make her let go faster in case this happens again? I eventually had to carefully pry her little jaws open and if this happens again, I'd like to know of a method that is less forceful.
Here is an extremely adorable picture of her being sneaky in case anyone is curious:
It'll probably go faster if you chop it's head off.....
Okay, that was mean... sorry... snakes are cool to look at but I'd never stick my hands near one.... and that is a cute picture... although I could mistake it for a lizard since I can't really see it...
Okay, so on a serious note... I found this bit of information from THIS SITE:
Snakes teeth curve towards the back of their mouth, so when you get to its head, you will need to slide its head forward to disengage the teeth.
At this point the biter and the bitten should be free of each other. If the snake is being uncooperative in releasing, get a beer. (Don't drink it yourself.) Pour some into the snakes mouth. This will encourage him to release because snakes don't like beer. If you don't have beer, any alcoholic or carbonated beverage will do.
Honestly, I'd be chopping off human heads before I turn on any of my own little buddies! Imagine how crazy that would be... a barbaric woman chopping off human heads with a poor snake stuck on her hand.
But, seriously, thank you posting some info for me. I'll definitely keep it in mind if this happens again.
pushing towards the snakes mouth works, I saw a Brazilian police officer free his hand from the jaws of an anaconda using that method.
Thanks for letting me know! I'm pretty sure I would have freaked out if an anaconda tried eating my hand, but I think I can keep my cool with my King.
I just wrote a long reply but accidentally hit backspace so now it's gone.
Anyway, thanks! She's still pretty little so I think the spray bottle will do. The credit card trick sounds like a great tip, too. But I was definitely an idiot and she sure let me know it.
I feed her frozen as well, so thanks for the website! The pet shops around here aren't very reliable and like to overprice their products. Luckily for me, the biggest thing she'll eat when she's full grown is a rat. No feeder rabbits here!
I agree that anyone considering a snake, or any pet really, should definitely do their research. I'd also like to add that some employees don't always know what their talking about, so it'd be a good idea to have more than one source of info before buying. I should know, I was a slave for PetSmart for awhile.
your photograph almost looks like the snake image in the Closer video by Nine Inch Nails. cool.
As an amateur photographer, I'm always practicing on my animals and get a decent shot every blue moon. I think that was an eel in the video though, right?
your right..i ment the Hurt video..
Well, I only knew it was an eel because I cheated and looked for the vid on YouTube.
What is it they say about snakes that also apply to people? "You can't change a snake's spots" or something like that. I used to keep snakes when I was a kid. Snakes don't make friends - at least mine didn't. They can be counted on to hunt and eat. They aren't good at backgammon and will bite you when they are hungry or feel threatened.
And that is a great picture! National Geographic quality.
