What is the best point and shoot digital camera?

I would like to purchase my 15 year old daughter a new digital camera. The Fugi camera lasted about a year and I have no idea what happened to it.

She wants to be able to zoom at football games, take pics with friends and use black and white with the option to use a one color element. So, Im at a loss.

I would like to keep the purchase price below $250.00

Does anyone have a suggestion?

I looked at the Sony Cybershot and was considering it prior to making this post. Does it have a fast caption speed. I know the Fugi she had and the Cannon that I have has enough delay that alot of the times the subject has moved and I miss the shot. My cannon is a little better than her Fugi, because it does have an action mode.

Also can u take black & white pics and have a color (ie. red truck) in the pics?

Panasonic Lumix. If she wants to take photos at football then you need a decent optical zoom, and the Lumix has a minimum of 10x. They're also really hardy, I've been taking mine into moshpits for nearly two years and although its a little battered and scratched on the outside, it works perfectly.

The older models have a faster capture speed, but they are all pretty good. As I said, I use mine for concerts where the subjects are very rarely standing still.

All the Lumixes I have, have the colour effect option, but to be honest you can get the same results, if not better, from a good graphics program, especially if you're only 15.

I have heard good things about the Sony.  Generally, any digital camera made by a camera mfg is good (Nikon, Olympus, Fuji).  You will want 3x optical zoom and a automatically closing lens cover.  These days one needn't be concerned with the MP number since in most home-user cases, 3MP is overkill.  I would look at what size memory it has and how much to upgrade 2 GB.  Get a 2GD memory card immediately since these high resolution cameras can fill up the small included card or internal memory quickly.  Also the ability to use AA size batteries is a must.  Standard USB hookup... no docking desktop stations.

You would have different criteria if this were being used professionally but something for a point and shoot purpose won't need optional manual settings.  The girl that works with me got a Nikon CoolPix and I was very impressed with the clarity of focus and quality of color on auto settings.

I myself own 2 Fuji cameras that have tons of manual settings and filters that come in handy but they take a bit of learning to use.   If I were going to buy a compact point-n-shoot for myself right now that I could drop in my pocket, I would get a L14 Nikon and also a 2GB SD memory card.  Total for both should be under 130 incl shipping.

and yes.. she told me that there is no lag between pressing the shutter release and taking the picture.  The write time between pictures is good too.

[/quote]I remember when those came out and I wanted one sooo badly.  The one I saw was so cute.  My wife said I was going to have to sell some of my luggage first.
