Drag and Street Racing

When I was in school.....no I didn't walk ten miles to school in the snow! When I was in high school, drag racing was huge on Friday nights after the varsity football games. Do kids still do that these days? They must because I see movies and video games focused on such.  I know it is illegal in some states, while others provide an area that is safe, because lets face it...kids are kids and they will find an area. It is usually a straight-away area that is not real populated.

Anyone street drag? Have teens that are into it?

Re: Drag & Street Racing

When I was in High School we would get together in groups of 4 or 5 cars and see who was the fastest..
One friday night (actually, Saturday morning) we ended up with about 50-60 of us (at least 30 cars).. we went down to Rivergrade Road in Irwindale (25 years ago it was a perfect drag-strip).. we did about 10 - 20 full-out drags when suddenly no less than 20 Irwindale PD and Highway Patrol swooped in from every direction and busted us ALL .. those that were racing went to jail.. every single other one of us walked away with tickets for broken tail lights, missing front license plates (that was me), and anything else you could think of - nobody went home that night without a violation of some sort... I never did any 'planned' drags after that..

It's a lot riskier today because in california if you get busted racing they throw your car into a crusher - and i think they make you watch when they crush it.. that would suck..

Re: Drag & Street Racing.

so husband of mine at the time was boyfriend of mine, and decided to pick me up from work one hot summer evening in his Camaro Z28 LT1 which has had some significant engine enhancements such as a 12:1 engine compression ratio, 525 lift on the cam, and rev limit pushed to about 8,000 rpm.  i get in the car. buckle up and i'm thinking okay, off to a movie. oh no, not exactly. after i buckle we proceed to exit the parking lot which was fine until we hit the surface street and some loser in a dodge decides he can take us. before i even knew what was going on because i have never been in  car race/drag or anything like such, boyfriend hits the throttle and the camaro launches, throwing my head against the seat so forcefull i felt i couldn't turn my head for nothing! then he hits second gear, again, such a forceful shift that it breaks the back tires loose and we are now sideways down the surface street. so what does he do as i sit there and wet myself? nothing! he kept the wheel straight. the throttle to the floor and the cars straightens out as we are approaching 100mph. never seen the dodge after that.

his other "fun" thing to do....from that day on he had to do it without 2na, was to throw the car into power slides around corners.  we do still have that camaro....20 years later. it is parked inside the manroom. maybe it will be mini me's one day.

how does he get his fast car thrills these days? in his carrera. decides to take me for a ride one day and as he is going thru the gears, i'm just chillaxing enjoying the ride and notice that things are zipping by us quite quickly when i happen to glance at the speedometer and we are approaching 1fricken80. grrrr. boy did i ever let him have it! now it is a you drive your and i'll drive mine relationship!

Its super illegal to street race anywhere near me.It still happens though. But theres been a lot of gang related activity associated with street racing, not to mention several deaths every year. They now have check points looking for NOS in the car, computerized racing components, and will actually bust out the ruler and measure the specs of your car. Ive had it happen twice. I am .25 inches above the legal height for my car, so im good but they always want to check. Lucky me...

Anyways, we have speedways now where drag racing IS legal and its regulated and you have to wear a helmet and all that junk. You can actually race the police on the speedway too, which is always pretty cool

They have rice rocket racing, muscle car races, sprint car races and other various things.

whoa! that's kind of sexy cool AE. does your car have the appearance of a drag car or fast car? is that why you get stopped so much?

It looks like this, but silver with blue accents.

Re: Drag & Street Racing.

When I was in high school & in my early 20's, I street raced a cobra here in Houston.  My dad even street raced here in the 60's.  On saturday & wendsday nights, there were several spots where around 300 people would show up.  Some spots would be the kids with the import cars & grocery getters, & others would be the older guy's towing hot rods & race cars in on trailers.  The cops used to stop & watch the racing.  One once told me that he would rather have us race on the back road that we were on instead of a busy street & that it's worthless because we would be back within 30 minutes.  It was good for many years until alot of gangsta, gun shooting thugs took over & it got violent.  The cops cracked down & now you very rarely see any more racing going on here.  No serious street racing has happened here in the past 4 years.
