Driver's License Question

Does anyone know if your driver's license is suspended in one state is it automatically suspended for all other states?

yes! the systems are indeed linked. also, it would affect any rental car contracts.

Thing is, they're not all "linked".  Some states have worked out reciprocation deals, others have not.  For example, it's almost common practice around here to get a NY DL if your NJ one gets suspended, as long as you have a NY address to use.  I know numerous people who have done this over the years.  I'm not saying it's legal, not by any means, but since NJ and NY don't reciprocate, it slips through the cracks all the time.  You'll have to check with the state your DL is issued from, and find out if they honor the suspension from out of state, or not.

you're right! i probably should have reworded/replaced the words "all linked" . i've gone on a few night rides and it is the officers discretion on how in depth he/she wishes to run an ID during a stop. it could be a local check and/or non-local.

Depending on the area, they can't do an in-depth check.   A friend got nabbed for a DUI here in NJ.  He knew he was going to be suspended, so before the court date (before the suspension hit the books) he switched all of his paperwork over to his NY address, and got himself a NY DL.  A few weeks later, he got caught speeding in Sussex County, kind of the middle of nowhere, NJ.  He handed the officer his NY DL, and was handed a ticket back.  If he had been pulled over in a larger city, the cop would have had the ability to look up his info and find out that he really shouldn't have been driving.  As it was, he paid the ticket, the points were applied to his NY DL, and that was that.  If he had gone to court over it, he'd probably have gotten caught.  Again, this isn't necessarily legal, but it's fairly commonplace.

Re: Driver's License Question

Damn, its a long story but I got a speeding ticket in Va over the July 4 weekend, i paid the ticket but not the fees and other crap associated with it, so while i was away i got a notice from the VA DMV and it said that my privilege to operate a vehice in Virginia was suspended, wouldn't it have said just suspended period?

A simple phone call can clear this up... although I assume you'll have to wait until tomorrow before the DMV will be open...

No because you can only have a license in one state. Other states only let you drive in their state as a courtesy. I don't know if the systems are linked but I can find out from my uncle since he is a cop ina tourist town and runs across a lot of out of state DL. I will call him and get back here..

Re: Driver's License Question

Thanks for the advice/answers everyone.  I FINALLY got through to the VA Beach court, after being on hold for THREE hours, no kidding, its now 11:45 and i've been on hold since I called at 8:45.  Every half hour I was automatically disconnected, and had to redial.  When I got a live person they told me that there are only TWO people answering phones down there, I have never heard anything so retarded.  Anyway, I ask her if my license is suspended here, she didnt know anything for sure (how dumb is that?) but she "thinks" that it will probably be a problem when i go to renew my license (already knew that), and she also "thinks" that it wouldnt have hit the NY records yet seeing that it was fairly recent, so she "thinks" I'm ok for now.

I also spoke to the DMV in VA Beach and funnily enough they couldnt answer any of those questions definitively either, hmmm how strange, go figure!!
