Did you feel it? (earthquake in New Jersey)

Of course it's kid's-stuff for us Californians, but a 3.0 earthquake in New Jersey would probably get your attention.  You can see the USGS report HERE..

Did you feel it??

New Jersey gets earthquakes...since when?

Anyplace can get earthquakes..But some places (like my back yard) get more than others.. There have been a few small ones in New Jersey in the last few years.. And dont forget, the largest earthquake ever recorded within the continental United States occurred in Missouri.

Re: Did you feel it? (earthquake in New Jersey)

if i remember correctly from a loooonnng time ago, isnt there a major fault line where the continental plates meet right there in the atlantic? that would make for some earthquakes. i think the ones on the west coast are caused primarily from the volcanic activity aka the ring of fire ...i think.

edit: from wikipedia

The location where two plates meet is called a plate boundary, and plate boundaries are commonly associated with geological events such as earthquakes and the creation of topographic features such as mountains, volcanoes, mid-ocean ridges, and oceanic trenches. The majority of the world's active volcanoes occur along plate boundaries, with the Pacific Plate's Ring of Fire being most active and most widely known. These boundaries are discussed in further detail below.

its official. ima geek. i must have actually like geography and oceanography. my teachers would be so proud.

Yea.. I remember something about there being a huge plate running from Canada down through NY/NJ region... and that quakes in this region tend to touch a wider area because of intraplate activity rathern than interplate activity (like what happens in Cali)

I think New England gets something like 30 recorded earthquakes a year... NJ has to feel some of that I would think...

I can remember some years ago sitting in the living room w/my brother back in Mass watching tv on a Saturday afternoon... suddenly the house began to shake & we watched our beer cans walk across the coffee table.. we just looked at each other for a moment trying to figure out what it was.(explosion/military plane breaking the sound barrier/etc). then we heard all the various house alarms in the neighborhood going off..  I think we were too young & stupid to do anything other than laugh at the beer cans walking...

We've always had them in this area, they just aren't very strong.  One of these days, Manhattan's just going to sink.  Last night's was about the strongest in this area in my lifetime, and it was a whopping 3.0.  I personally didn't feel it at all, unless I mistook it for a freight train in my backyard, or a plane overhead, due to my proximity to Newark Airport.  My sister and her husband felt it, but said they didn't realize it was an earthquake, they thought it was Picatinny Arsenal, maybe doing ammo testing or something (not uncommon at all).  It was only this morning when she was getting ready for work and caught the news when she realized it was the Ramapo Fault Line

Wow I so did not know that...I always thought earthquakes were a west coast thing, tornadoes a midwest thing and hurricanes an east coast/gulf thing....I'll still take my earthquakes over the other two though...

Hands down, I'll take a hurricane over any of them.  At least with a hurricane, you get about a week's notice before it hits.  Tornados get what, 20 minutes warning, tops?  Earthquakes just show up, no warning whatsoever.  No thanks.  I like having time to prepare, and time to leave, if necessary.

that's funny! we were just talking about earthquakes at dinner last evening w/mini. she was telling us she is happy there are none in this area. *ugh oh*

found the local news on it.

this would be great if it was a dashboard widget on my mac. i'd love to see the seismic activity globally.
