United Nations email scam

UNITED NATIONS MICRO-FINANCE & CAPITAL DEVELOPMENT FUND

Wow!  An official UN logo and everything!  This must be real, right?  WRONG..

This is an "advanced fee fraud" where the scammer draws you in based on your greed to get what you know is not yours (some argue that if you get scammed, you deserved it) - they make you jump through a few hoops to get your $250,000, then, just before they send you the money, they require some fee or tax to be paid by you in advance.  You send the money (generally a few hundred dollars) to release your funds, and you never hear from them again.

Some tips that this email is a scam:

  • The "from" address, un.emp-45@msn.com is not an official United Nations email address - it is a free MSN/Live.com email
  • You probably are not a small business owner
  • If you are a small business owner, you probably did not apply for this non-existent award
  • The 3rd-grade level grammar is a clue that it was written by an idiot, not the United Nations Executive General Secretary
  • The email address listed for the Grant Applications and Claims Department: unmfcdf@yahoo.co.th does not appear to be an official United Nations email address - it appears to be a Yahoo email address originating from Thailand.

If you get this email, delete it.  No harm has been done by opening it/reading it.

I openend this post with "How stupid do the scammers think we are?" but unfortunatly, hundreds if not thousands of people fall for this type of scam every year, driven by the greed to get something that they know they are not even entitled to.
