encryption problems with samsung galaxy note 4 please help

I recently bought a refurbished Samasung galaxy note 4 sm-n910a from ebay it was shipped from china but is an AT&T model.

The problem I'm having is that when I try to enable encryption I get the encryption progress bar goes to 100% then restarts the phone but when it goes to boot up it just hangs on the samsung logo and won't respond to any commands even to power off, the encryption process was not interrupted and I left it for over 5 hours and it just stayed like this so I had to do a factory reset just to get the phone working again which it is now. I tried this three times with the same result each time having to factory reset to restore functionality to the device

I would like to use encryption just so that my plans for world domination are never revealed but have not found a way around this yet and Samsung customer support just tell me the phone needs to be physically looked at so I'm a bit stuck because it's too much hassle sending it off. the only other problem I'm having is that the phone keeps telling me the s-pen is detached when it isn't. I had a samsung galaxy note 2 which i encrypted with no problems so don't understand whats going wrong.

Also when i spoke to Samsung customer service (europe) i gave them system info for the phone and the guy i spoke told it was a rooted phone but i don't think it is system status says official any help with this?

Sounds like you got what you paid for.. Send it back and get a refund, then go buy a phone from a real reseller.

If I can't solve the problem I will be sending it back so any useful comment's about possible reasons or fixes are welcome but please don't just post saying send it back that's not what I asked

You asked how to fix the problem. Sending it back is probably your only fix since you've already tried pretty much anything else that might have helped and it sounds like the other guy was right. You got what you paid for. You shouldnt be surprised.

When you enable encryption are their any options? Like "strong" encryption, "kinda strong", 256bit vs 128bit, etc? maybe only certain options dont work? Or is it all or nothing ON or OFF ?

You can opt for "quick encryption"-(active memory only) or "full encryption" those are the only two options and I have not tried the quick encryption option yet but will give it a go in a few minutes and see what happens.

Problem solved, for some reason or another it turns out all the problems were related to a faulty battery, battery has now been replaced everything working fine

Yeah soon after I first posted the battery started to show 30-40% and with everything turned off wifi, data, bluetooth, and battery saving mode enabled it would just turn off a few minutes later, when I then connected the charger would show 0% battery and then start charging. I googled and found alot of people having random issues which ended up disappearing after replacing the battery.

I don't understand how that relates to the issues I was having but one thing to note is that when you go to enable encryption on the phone you can only start the process if the battery has 80% charge and is connected to the charger and it normally takes around an hour to complete. so who knows

Did you have to pay for the battery or did the vendor replace it free of charge?

I replaced it myself because the seller is in China and didn't want to wait but will be asking the seller for a partial refund to cover the cost of the replacement as he has already acknowledged the problem and offered a full refund, but I will wait to see if any of the problems return or any new ones come up before I do as I might still want the full refund.
