Ever Been Pulled Over? Here's a few tips!

I saw this article today, and since some of you already know Ive been lucky enough to have gotten 2 tickets in 2 months, this really caught my eye! These are tips from an actual state trooper who's job was to pull people over for traffic violations. There are a few that made me say "well, duh!" but others i didnt know (like keep your engine running!)

Im going to do a brief summary, but please check out the full article here There are some funny anecdotes in the article!

  • Pull over in a safe area: Use your head. Dont pull over anywhere that can leave you or the police officer in danger (ie, in the middle of the road!) True story-I was driving the other night, and a cop flipped on their lights and siren. The person was obviously flustered, and just stopped smack in the middle of the intersection. The cop got on their megaphone and was like- pull over to the side of the road. The person was just freaked out, you could tell. Single younger female driving alone, but that could have turned real ugly if there had been more traffic.
  • Dont Coast: Pull over to the first safe place you see. If you pass a couple good places to pull over, the cop could get suspicious that you are trying to hide something
  • Keep the engine running: especially if you have an older, unreliable car! If the officer asks you to, then you should turn it off.
  • Keep your hands on the wheel: Officers are naturally apprehensive if they cant see your hands. Dont give them a reason!
  • Stay in the car: Seriously, stay in the car.
  • Be careful what you say: Remember, theyre just doing their job. No matter how silly you might think it is. As the Officer says " I never demand respect, but i dont tolerate dis-respect" No one is happy to get a ticket, but arguing (or worse) wont help matters.

That worked for me once. LOL.

The only other time I ever got pulled over, the officer said, "young lady do you know you were going 75 in a 50mph zone?" And yes, I did know that.  But I apologized profusely but didn't try to talk my way out of it. I waited for my ticket. Instead I got a 10 minute lecture about how I could get really hurt in my small vehicle if I hit a deer - which apparently were out frequently on that highway at that time of eve, and that he was more concerned about my safety than giving me a ticket.

Sitting through the lecture was worth not getting a ticket. :)

It takes longer for them to call in your information and give a ticket... I'd say you lucked out and saved time!

I got pulled over for doing 15 over in a schoolzone once years ago... I didn't know it was a schoolzone because I got out of school mid-day that year and that particular school area hadn't converted to the flashing signs yet... my license said I was from a different city (I hadn't changed it yet) so when he asked why I was around there I said I was visiting my gramma (who I was actually living with at the time) in order to avoid getting some fine for not updating my information or something... evidently it just looked like I wasn't from around there and unaware of the school zone and that I was the sweet girl visiting her gramma... I got a warning...

I was actually passing through the schoolzone to get to my boyfriend's house.

I actually predicted my first ticket ever... well sorta... I had different friends that I would drive around with... and one particular guy always b*tched about my driving... said I was going to get pulled over... I was like 'the first ticket I ever get, I bet you're going to be in the car with me!' basically b*tching that his pessimistic vibe was going to give me bad luck... like 2 months later he was in the car with me and I got a ticket for running a stop sign I never saw... and oddly enough after he  mentioned the stop sign I ran I ran a second on purpose (middle of the night, no one around)... I didn't get a ticket for the one I ran on purpose... just the one I truthfully never saw... and I was right, my first ticket was with him!

I usually get warnings unless I have someone in the car with me... my last ticket was June of 2004... a BS ticket at that... cop lied and said I was doing 70 in a 45 which didn't happen... I *was* doing 80-90 in the 60 when I thought he was just a car that was stalking me (he tailgated me for 15 miles on a dark empty road)... what was worse was that there was no 'safe' place to pull over for another 15 miles or so... I just found a stupid street light that finally popped up... and rolled down my window like an inch and a half...

I've never turned my engine off... and leave my seatbelt on... I don't need him to give me a ticket for driving without a seatbelt just because I took it off to get my insurance and he feels like being a d***... yes that's happened to a friend of mine.

I get annoyed when cops pull people over for stupid crap... 'I pulled you over because you don't have a front license plate...' ... 'well officer there's a drug dealers house 2 blocks from here, shouldn't you be doing something about *that* instead of whining about my license plate? I'm unaware how my lacking a front license plate is a danger to anyone...'

*sigh*

That happened to me, and the cop actually watched me take my seatbelt off and put it back on!  I was pulled over for speeding (which I was, I'll admit it).  When I pulled over, I left the engine running, seatbelt on, hands on the steering wheel.  When the cop asked for my paperwork, I couldn't reach my glovebox, so I took my seatbelt off, but the car was still running.  I got the paperwork, handed it to him, and put my seatbelt back on.  Bastard gave me a no seatbelt ticket, because technically, I was in a running vehicle and not wearing it.  If I ever get pulled over again, I'm going to ask permission to take the seatbelt off, that was ridiculous.

*waves* That was me that got a friggin ticket for no front license plate. Some of you have seen my car, its  alil sports car with a full body kit on it. No where to put a front plate. The dealership never gave me one. DMV never even sent me a front plate! The cop who gave me the ticket pulled the whole "well the law is the law" Ok, i GET that...but seriously? I wasnt even speeding. He pulled me over purely for the front plate. So now i have to go get holes drilled into the body kit to put the stupid plate on. I am bitter...  ugh.

Re: Ever Been Pulled Over? Here's a few tips!

my advice..and ive heard this from more than one person including law enforcement...never admit guilt!

the only time that i had to deal with a crappy policeman was on my way to get my husbands car one evening. to set the scene.. we lived in a questionable neighborhood and after arriving home we forgot that i had picked him up from work. so i pulled into our driveway and pulled right back out. there was a cop on guard (as most nights) across the street in a parking lot. he followed me about 5 miles to my husbands car. as i turned down the street the car was parked on he finally pulled me over. he told me i had been going 45 in a 35. (raidar never went off) i told him no i wasnt because i saw him following me since my street. (one kinda makes a point to go the speed limit if you are being followed by authorities) he didnt know what to say to that. then my husband chimmed in and told him we probably looked suspecious for what happened but that his car was right there (about 25 feet away), our licenses matched our street address where he spotted us, we checked out..... so he didnt argue any further about it and let us go. but to "catch" us i think he was willing to fudge a little information if he had had to make a report.

just thought Zoo might be able to help with this. isnt her hubby a cop?

If I did it, I did it.  I don't argue.

About five years ago, I was in the car with one of my friends, and we were going to visit another friend.  He didn't have a license; it was suspended or something.  I didn't really pay much attention to that, plus it was his car, so he drove.  We were a few blocks away from my friend's house, and we got pulled over.  I don't remember why, but I just remember the cop was questioning him outside the car. My friend was a 20 something  year old Hispanic male, shaved head, baggy clothes, so of course, the cop pulled him out of the car.  Well, I was sitting in the car, watching my friend and the cop, and I decided to get out and help.  Seriously, the cop looked me and screamed for me to get back in the car.  I, stubborn one, started trying to explain to the cop that we were just going to a friends.  He starts walking toward me, puts his hand on his gun, and tells me again to get back in the car.  Yeah... I got back in the car.  Stupid cop.  I had to get back out anyway to drive because I was the one with the license.

i can see them getting anxious for fear of their safety. i can totally understand. there are too many crazies out there. you ever see that video of the cop getting shot point blank after he pulled tow guys over and one got out of the car? not cool! i had a friend of mine that got out of his car after being pulled over for speeding. he was (true story) bringing his pregnant wife to the ER. she was in labor! i guess he rushed the cop too fast because he actually pulled his gun out and pointed at my friend. well my friend ended up deilvering his daughter in the car and lived to tell the tale.
