Fleas & Ticks???

I know its Friday today, but my Friday hasn’t gone too well. See my smallest dog Bit-Bit has been staying at my moms for the last 3 weeks… And yesterday my sister calls me to tell me he has FLEAS & TICKS!!!! YES TICKS!!! So im freaking out…[literally freaking out] See my dogs are both indoor dogs  and since my mom took my little one he’s  been sleeping outside with the other two dogs… Ive NEVER had a flea or tick problem until now.. So I literally want to rush over there to pick him up.. but then I figured its . The whole night I wasn’t able to sleep thinking theres some creepy crawlers on my poor babys skin. I called petsmart to set up an appointment but its not till Sunday..  Does anyone have any good advise on how I can get rid of these little guys.. Personally I’ve never dealed with any infestations so I don’t really know much. I’ve heard it hard to get rid of ticks since the stick to their skin.. Any info will do… thank you!

My friend's dog had ticks once...from what I remeber she was told by the vet to use tweezers to remove them and place them in a ziplock bag for testing..you should be careful because the reason for the testing is that ticks carry lyme disease

Just to clarify, there are several species of ticks in the US, and only ONE of those species, Deer Ticks, carries Lyme Disease.

Have you seen your dog yet? How bad is she?

I know you said you can't get her to the groomers until Sunday. No matter how much it sucks, DO NOT let your dog near your furniture or carpets between now and then!!! Lock her in the garage or something, but the fleas can move off the dog and into your carpet. When I was a kid, my dog caught a bad case of fleas while playing with a neighbor's dog, and we didn't catch it in time. Both my sister and I were covered in bites, and my parents wound up replacing a big section of the living room carpet by the time all was said and done. It was the only way to stop the cycle of carpet infesting dog/dog infesting carpet.

ADD: My skin is crawling just remembering that, ick!

Definitely keep him away from your other dog!  Do you have a basement, garage, mudroom, anything tiled or concrete floored?

Sounds like the perfect place.  Get the little guy in the door, and straight into the laundry room.  I've never had a dog small enough to bathe in a sink after puppyhood....how cute, take a photograph!  After the fleas are off, of course.

You need to get him flea dipped and then on some frontline just to make sure they stay gone. If for some reason they get in your house you can buy flea bombs just like you can roach bombs and they do work because I have had to use them before.

Re: Fleas & Ticks???

Yes... get ready to flea bomb your place... or at least do some serious flea damage control... a few fleas can infest your house before you even realize it... all it takes is for a few eggs to fall off the dog and get into the carpet... they'll infest under furniture, rugs, anything... so once you get your baby, get ready to protect the house, otherwise you may never get rid of the problem.

Besides bombing, I've had good results with the powder you sprinkled and work into the carpet... if you do that, just be sure to move all furniture and get under it all... but I had to use a generous amount...

Re: Fleas & Ticks???

Check the small places for ticks ... in & around the ears, between the toes & pads, and in the crooks of his legs (doggie arm pits).  Did you buy the actual Advantage from the vet, or did you buy the knockoff that Hartz sells?  Be careful with the flea shampoo.  On rare occasions it can irritate dogs' skin ... doggie oatmeal shampoo is good for itchy or irritated skin.

Good luck, and keep up posted!
