LOL...in two places even! In front loading washers they get caught in the rubber gasket in the front...easy to find but one of the front loaders at the infant center stopped working and it turned out that baby socks are small enough to find their way into a motor part...so yeah we found socks!

My daughter had the same problem Tuna, and after all efforts to relieve the problem failed, she got rid of the front loader and bought one of the new high efficiency top loaders.

clearly i was hung up on the 'look' of the LG's. they are a great appliance, but i failed to do the rest of the homework which was the 'problem' side of the ownership!

Unfortunately we all do that sometimes.  My daughter was not too happy to go out and buy another expensive washer, but she just got to the point she couldn't stand that machine any more.  I helped her do some online research and found there were many complaints about front loaders.  See did not buy the top loader until she had researched it thoroughly.

Sorry if someone already said this but i was told very adamantly by the salesman:  "LEAVE THE DOOR OPEN WHEN YOU ARE NOT USING, OR IT WILL NOT DRY OUT AND GET MOLDY"  Sorry for the shouting too, just wanted to stress!

Ann, my daughter always left the door open and did everything that was suggested by the manufacturer and others to prevent the problem with mold, but nothing worked.  She did not have a humidity problem in her laundry room, verifying that fact by putting a humidity gauge in the room.

I had a friend 30 years ago who had a front loader and had the same problems back then.  When my daughter bought her machine, I thought surely after 30 years the problems had been solved by the manufacturers, but obviously they have not been able to do that.

still testing all of the suggestions. the bleach idea worked for about a day. currently, the cycle of vinegar and hot water is doing well. ran that yesterday, then dried the drum off and wiped the gasket clean & dry. no odor to speak of. i also leave the door open when not in use so the combination of those last three may be the trick. i'm giving it one more day to air out and then i'll close the loader door tomorrow. open it on saturday and hope the odor is still gone.

I wish it was SUMMER!

yes! the vinegar did the trick. so i only had to use it once. so that, combined w/wiping down the inside drum + the rubber gasket/seal after my final load on laundry day, ensures is dry. i also leave the door open. it has gotten closed a few times, probably by HOM, but when i open it for a quick sniff.....nothing!
