DeFrag Advise Needed

( Hopefully this is in the right forum, if not, please move...)

I am going to ATTEMPT to defrag my PC. I tried once before let it go for like 12 hours and it was only at 1%. I'm wondering is there something I should do before or after, never done it before, do I just click to defrag and wait a week? Will it erase any of my info?

Any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Are you still working in the background as defrag runs? Because if you are, it might be restarting...

You also need to make sure there is enough free space on your hard drive... about 15-20% should be sufficient. If you don't have any free space left... I suggest getting rid of any unnecessary files or programs. (Hey, you didn't really need that SpongeBobSqarePants Screensaver anyway... you've never even USED IT!)

To be safe you can either make sure you have no programs or TSRs running... oooor, you can restart your computer in safe mode and defrag from there.

If you're just looking for faster... try Power Defrag

Re: Power DeFrag?

What? and where is Power Defrag? it won't let me do anything in the background when I try to run the defrag, so no, I don't think anything else is running. It says I have a TON of free space, over half, I don't remember the exact #. I've only had the computer about a year, and I havn't put too much crap in it, no sponge bob, maybe saved a few naughty pics of Foamy and Kahdaver, but they don't take up too much room. ...lmao....

OKay, Anime...I must be dumb. I downloaded Power DeFrag, and it's on my desk top, I can open the program and I can see the options, but how do I make it DO it? sorry...lmao

Re: Power DeFrag?

I believe on your left of the window there's the options you can check... and then once you do that around the bottom right corner of the window there should be a 'begin' button... I think... I'm on someone else's computer right now so I don't have to program available.

I found it late last night, I was already off line, but thanks for responding, yeah, there's a 'begin' button all the way in the bottom right hand corner, don't know how I missed it...blonde moment...no offense!

98 or XP?

XP, does it make a differance?

Re: 98 or XP

You might want to check your disk for errors before defragging.

For Win98, we used to run the Scandisk utility that came with Windows before we defragged. It was in the Tools folder in our Programs list.

For XP we can run CheckDisk. Go to My Computer and right-click on C Drive. Choose Properties, Tools, Check Now. Tell it to fix errors and recover bad sectors. CheckDisk will run on your next reboot.

Then as others have said, clean up a bit first by doing a Dick Cleanup. Go to My Computer and right-click on C Drive. Choose Properties and click the Disk Cleanup button.

Close out any applications showing up in Task Manager that you recognize as "add on" programs like your anti-virus, printer monitor, etc. Shut off any screen saver you might have running. Do a defrag and reboot. If you haven't done a defrag in a while, it could take a couple of hours.

Still giving you trouble, you might want to get a different defrag utility. I have used Diskeeper Lite before. It's free and worth a try if Microsoft's defrag keeps hanging.
