Get someone's IP address from a (very offending) posted blog comment?

Hey people. Let me introduce myself, I am new to this site and the reason why I signed up to this site is that I have been insulted & violated several times over Internet. I am sick of it and the police do nothing about it. Now I want to take care of it myself. I have read many of these comments but I feel like it hasn't helped enough, even though I see there are a lot of clever people on this site. I have a problem. My problem is that yesterday (I saw it today), someone wrote a REALLY mean comment and posted it on my blog. This may sound silly of me & I guess you people are thinking that I shouldn't care n stuff. But this is not the first time this has happened and I REALLY want to track this comment to an IP address and after that see who's the owner of that IP address. The thing is, this jerk who posted this horrible comment on my blog, obviously did'nt send an email, this person posted a comment so I guess this makes it even harder to find their IP address? But maybe not for some genius. I could really use a hacker right now haha. Just kidding, but can you all feel my frustration? Knowing some people hate you and you have no idea who they are. Great. So please help me. Thanks for reading this, answers are appreciated.

NOTE: I am just wondering if there is a safe way to do this.

Re: Get someone's IP address from a (very offending) posted ...

Depending on what type of blog it is, you may, or may not even be able to get the IP address. If it's some sort of free blog like a Myspace blog, i dont think you can get the IP. If it is your own blog that you host and have configured then it is possible to get the IP address if you have any sort of tracker or analytics set up on it.

So let's pretend for a moment that you DO get the IP - THEN what?

Once you have the IP address, it is trivial to plug it into a site like www.whois.domaintools.com and get the IP owner and general location of the IP address. This means for example that you would know the IP is "owned" by Time Warner Cable and it's coming out of the Newark New Jersey office (again, just an example) - so best case, you would know that this person is probably located in the New Jersey (or whatever) general area. But, your trail will stop there, because without a court-order, the actual IP owner (the Internet Service Provider) will not give you any other information.

Now - all of the above presumes that the person making these posts is taking no action to cover his or her tracks. IF the person has any brains at all, they would be using some sort of web-proxy or socks-proxy (ie TOR) - if that is the case, if you were able to get the IP address, it would show as being located in Alaska, or Taiwan, or some other location that has nothing to do with the actual location of the offending poster. Your trail would stop there.

So here is what you do - and trust me, this advice comes from someone that has had to put up with this sort of crap from dozens of idiots that feel all big and brave when hiding behind an computer screen: Turn off anonymous posts on your blog, or wall, or wherever you are seeing these things - just dont allow them to do it. If they still do, just ignore it. Idiots like this THRIVE on your reaction. If you dont react, they get bored, and move on - like a moth buzzing around a bright-light. Turn off the light and they go away. You have better things to do with your life, while idiots like this do not.

I second this...

Basically, there's no way to know who it is without a court order or already knowing the person and their IP address (assuming they're not using a proxy), and anything you *could* do with an IP when it comes to your blog, would be considered a 'reaction' and would just further fuel their attempts and would eventually become ineffective (like, if they decided to use a proxy, lol)... no reaction makes the pathetic keyboard-warriors powerless... pretend they don't exist...

So you see, simply not allowing them to comment as hubby said, is really the best option... and I say this from another been-there-done-that point of view.

There are some people who are going to get it. In the meantime, we collect IPs. Because collecting IPs tends to turn up something over time. Tends to show patterns. You sure are being discouraging. You trying to turn people off of their own investigative work? You have some naughty behavior you don't want anyone to connect to you IRL? Careful, now.

Get someone's IP address from a blog

Your blog-logs should give you the IP address. But having the IP address will not allow you to contact them in any way.

I happen to own a website and I have to deal with meanies, a-Holes and idiots posting stupid things almost daily. My advice is to just delete the posts and get some thicker skin.

most hosts will allow you to place analytics or other tracking on the site/blog/vlog/whatever and/or allow you to view the access logs which would give you the IP address.. You can then subpoena the ISP of that IP address to provide you the customer information for who's using that IP address.. but.. then what will you do?

Other suggestions would be to 1) ignore it (the internet has a very high percentage of a-holes) or 2) disable commenting..

We are tryng to prove whether the same IP address is coming from the same person on two different post who might be using different names. Is there any one that could tell me if I give them the forum page urls? Thankyou

Usually only the website owner can give that information, and most websites have a privacy policy that states they will only give out that kind of information when compelled by court order or subpoena. So it all depends on what website it is you are talking about. But you just giving the URL to some random person on the internet will not help you unless that particular website makes the IP info visible to everyone, in which case you would have already seen it yourself.
