Come out Come Out Wherever You Are!

So in case you didn't know, I'm a huge fan of Vampire books. Well technically, i love virtually all things "underworldly"- not to be confused with other-worldly. I thought I'd start out by listing just a few of the vampire series' that I read on a regular basis and would recommend. Eventually i'll try to do a mini-review on them and I know many of you have read a lot of them as well!

  • Twilight Saga by Stephanie Meyer
  • Southern Vampire Mysteries by Charlaine Harris
  • Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter by Laurel K. Hamilton
  • The Hollows by Kim Harrison
  • Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead
  • Dark Hunter by Sherrilyn Kenyon
  • The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher
  • The Dark Ones by Katie MacAlister
  • House of Night by P.C. and Kristen Cast
  • The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice
  • The New Vampire Tales by Anne Rice
  • The Vampire Huntress by L.A. Banks
  • The Last Vampire Series by Christopher Pike
  • The Undead Series by Mary Janice Davidson
  • Wings in the Night by Magiie Shayne

Re: Come out Come Out Wherever You Are!

I read Twighlight, and loved it. I haven't read the other books in the series. Are they worth it?

I was surprised to see The Dresden Files on your list. I bought the entire series of books for my Dad who is a big SciFi fan. I also enjoy sci fi, but I'm not as into it as he is. Should I borrow the Dresden Files? Which one should I start with?

Also, none of the Anne Rice novels are on your list, but I am curious if you have any suggestions. I am going to New Orleans again this summer, and would love to read a book that takes place (even partly) in the city.

Oh i cant believe I forgot Anne Rice lol

I only like the Vampire Chronicles- not the New Vampire ones. I also loooove the Mayfair Witches, but thats for another thread lol

I have a few more to add that I forgot somehow thanks for the reminder!

As for twilight....the first book rocks, the second book is AWFUL (imo) The 3rd is ok, the 4th is great except she crammed 200 pages worth of stuff in the last 20 pages of the book. So i wasnt overly pleased with that.

Re: Come out Come Out Wherever You Are!

Ok, i HAVE to put my 2cents in here too!! lol

I read the first two books of the twilight series. I so have to agree with you AE, I didnt like the second one at all. It's like nothing happens at all until maybe in the last 40 pages or so. I just bought the last two books but I havent had the time to read them yet... Though I have to say, I categorically refuse (and always will) to watch the movies!! Thats a no-no.

Then... Anne Rice. Well, I read the Vampire Chronicles and I have to say I was a little bored. Was kinda glad when I managed to finish it. Christopher Pike, on the other hand, is one of my fav fantasy-authors and I loved his book(s).

Btw, has any of you read THE original book? Bram Stoker's Dracula?

I have read Bram Stoker's Dracula in high school. I enjoyed it.

 PrincessB,

Definitely get the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter by Laurell K. Hamilton.  I have not read her Anita Blake series yet, but  I have read the Merry Gentry series, and they are WONDERFUL!  Of course I also know Laurell personally, so I suppose I'm a little biased.  ~LOL~

Re: Come out Come Out Wherever You Are!

Ok, im only saying this b/c I know PrincessB pretty well. You'll want to stop reading around book 8. It gets a bit...pornographic after that.

I think you would get a KICK out of the Charlaine Harris books- theyre where the show True Blood on HBO gets its premise, but the books are SO MUCH funnier! Sookie can hear everyones thoughts, so that makes her a bit kookie to begin with, but shes also one of those girls that is ALWAYS in the wrong place at the wrong time. Theres a bit of sex in it, but nothing graphic and it doesnt overwhelm the novels.

The Hollows series is pretty funny too- but definitely has a more serious kick to it. Its about a Witch ( who is a total disaster magnet) a Vampyre (who is a spoiled rotten rich brat) and a Pixie (4inch man, and he has a small-man complex!)

Your so funny, thanks for protecting my innocence. LOL! My brother read the Southern Vampire series and recomended them too. I can't wait for summer break when I can sit and read without distractions again.

Re: Come out Come Out Wherever You Are!

Yeah, I started letting my "tween" daughter read them and she was HOOKED before that particular development...well, developed. One of the dilemmas of parenting thanks to Laurel K. lol. But I raised the kids to be prepared for adulthood so they wouldn't turn 18, go out into the world unprepared, and learn everything the hard way. So, I warned her about what was in it before handing it to her and told her if she had questions to ask, if it bothered her to stop reading, and if she was doing ok, that it was fine to read it. One of the first times I had to give that speech to the kids was during, "Me, Myself, and Irene." but...I'm off topic at this point! Funny story, though. :)
