I have a question about firefox and cookies (smitfraud adware)

After I did that big purging of my pc last week, I turned off my cookies. That didn't work, cause lots of the sites I use require them. So I had to turn them back on. How can I manage cookies, aside from turning them off and manually typing in the allow list? Firefox doesn't seem to have an option (that I can find) to require you to be notified and choose whether you want a cookie from a site. So if, I'm missing something here-can you point me in the right direction? And if this is just not available, do you know of an add-on that can handle it? Cause ya know I just love my add-ons!! LOLLaughing

Re: Hey Ashton-got a question about firefox and cookies

This is another one of those classical moments where two people ask the same question at the same time (one here and one in person)...and I'm having a heck of a time answering it.

There are programs and add-ons for IE and Firefox that will allow you to selectively delete cookies, but I have yet to encounter an add-on that allows you to selectively *save* a cookie...which would be tremendously easier.

I did find this, though. Hope it helps.

Re: I have a question about firefox and cookies

I have a different question, i am getting a ton of sypware cookies when doing my full system scan. they are all located in

Application Data/mozilla/firefox/profiles/b2kaqh9y.default/cookies

Now, when i go to that file, can I manually delete all them myself? Or do i need to have my antivirus do it?

This scan is taking FOREVER. I picked up Smitfraud somehow, and am trying to get rid of it.

Re: I have a question about firefox and cookies

Smitfraud is bad and is usually related to another Trojan.

I'll look into this a little later, but for now, you need to Google the uninstaller specifically for Smitfraud and run in Safe Mode (F8 on start up, usually).

Google these cleaners and scanners as well and download.

CCleaner

AdAware

Spybot.

I recently had to image and restore a system that had Smitfraud, among others. Really had a difficult time with it....

Re: firefox and cookies - SMITFRAUD help!!!

Ok, I already have spybot & CCleaner. However, I currently can't do ANYTHING on my computer. After finding the Smitfraud with spybot and being unable to remove I started doing a full system scan with Panda, well that was 2 1/2 days ago, and it's still running, with over 500,000 infected files all in the same directory I listed above (the mozilla, profile cookies)

I was originally still able to do other things, but now, there are a bunch of pop-ups, and the screen (other than the scan) is frozen, In fact the time is even frozen. Obviously I am posting this from my work computer LOL

I considered stopping the scan, and going in and deleting all those cookies, but I don't know if i can. Panda is "disinfecting" them not "deleting", so I was afraid I needed them for something.

Should I stop the scan, restart, and google the uninstaller? And start from there? I've never had this sort of problem before, so i'm really new to it all. How do I run the uninstaller from safe mode?

I'm guessing a system restore would do nothing to help?

Also, is the Smitfraud what is causing all those infected cookie files? Or is that a different issue? How come those cookies don't get deleted with all the other ones?

Re: firefox and cookies - SMITFRAUD help!!!

Yup.

You made it mad. The exact same thing happened to me, though it sounds like you have more access to your OS than I did.

I'm going to be honest here - begin thinking about pulling your personal data while you still have access. In my case, I only had access to the task manager in a normal boot up and could only run some scans with safe mode and a command prompt - that requires that you know a little about navigating with the DOS emulation prompt.

Ultimately, I failed miserably. I was able to clean out some of Smitfraud and the trojans that normally accompany it through the command prompt, but when I returned to normal boot up, I could only access task manager - which then only let me tab to cancel.

It was freaking hilarious...which I imagine you don't agree. The problem is that it's too hard to isolate exactly what other nasties may have been downloaded or accompanied Smitfraud. Smitfraud is a symptom of other problems and that doesn't allow for a simple solution. Check the net - you'll see what I'm talking about.

I'm not usually an advocate for Reformat and Re-install as I think it's for wusses, but in this case, that's what I'm recommending. Go ahead and download whatever removal tools you can find, but before you run them, back up your important files, pics, music, etc.

You never know, maybe you'll have better success than I did. It's worth a shot.

Sorry I can't be more help in this matter.

Re: firefox and cookies - SMITFRAUD help!!!

Would I be acting to immature if I stomped my feet yelling "I hate computers!"?

Ugh, this sounds like a HUGE undertaking. LUCKILY, I backup MOST of my personal data anyway on discs, I lost a ton of pics that way years ago. See, sometimes I do learn from my mistakes LOL!

Now to sound like a complete computer idiot (which I actually am by the way, in case you haven't figured that out).. How do I reformat and reinstall? That's going to be my last resort, but I figure I might as well know what the H-E- double hockey sticks I need to do in order to accomplish it.

ACTUALLY, I lied, my LAST resort will be to pay someone to do it all! Too bad you're way out in AZ!!!

Someone suggested this program... let me know if you think it might help.

PS, I owe you a drink for all your help!

EDIT* I didn't mean to make it mad Cry You think it will accept a heartfelt apology along with a nice new mouse/keyboard combo? I'm not above bribery.... What if I beg for forgiveness????

Re: firefox and cookies - SMITFRAUD help!!!

To reformat and reinstall, you're going to need the recovery disk or original OS that came with the computer.

Unfortunately, that is becoming a rarity these days as manufacturers are no longer including it with new computers.

Do you have that?

I would also consider making a second partition when you do this to put the backed up data on so you can isolate it and scan separately.

Let's start with step one, do you have the disk?

Cute response by the way..sorry that I have to be located where the sun shines 300 days a year.
