i dont want to know how i get someones ip address, i want to know what they can do with it if theyget mine? i have a friend(?) who at one time set up microsoft so that she could help me with my windows. but now i believe shes hacking all my passwords and emails. Can she do this and if so what can i do to protect myself. im really worried.
Well.. IF she set up some sort of remote access that does not prompt you to first permit access when she connects then theoretically she could do this.
Your comments make me ask this question, if people can get an IP address, what can they learn from it? All I know is that some websites I visit display my location, such as weather and news, and my IP address.
There usually isnt much anyone can do with just an IP.. Your IP will tell what general geographic location you are in, and IF your computer is not behind a firewall and/or is running an old version of windows, it might (underscore MIGHT) be possible to gain access to the data on it.. BUT, if you have a firewall/router, are using a patched version of Windows XP or newer, or OS X or Linux, it is highly unlikely that anyone can do anything just by knowing your IP.
Someone would have much better luck using social engineering in an email to trick you into installing a program on your computer that could easily give them full control of your computer. why should the bad guy do all the hard work when he knows it's easier to trick you into doing the work for him?
you could always ping it nonstop that ell prolly piss em off till they figure out how to flush their ip if your lucky itll crash there internet conection i know my mac pings until you close terminal its nice for when people piss me off

ehrm yah.. except most people would never know that you were pinging them since a ping (even ongoing, non-stop) from just one computer is harmless and virtually invisible.
If you have port scanner and net lab you can use their IP address to establish a remote connection to their computer through whatever open port port scanner picks up. You can actually do *quite* a lot with just an IP address.
I know you probably don't want to reveal this information, but I need it or I am going to be homeless, I got sick and my husband kick me out and got a younger women moved in all of the computers in that house belong to me and I desperately need access to one of them Thanks in advance
