How to find an IP address when the computer in question has been stolen
My daughter's apple laptop has been "borrowed" by an aquaintance and not returned. I have been told that if I know the IP address of the missing computer then it may be tracked. Since I do not have the computer, is it possible to find an IP address?

Re: How to find an IP address

1) Unless you have installed some kind of tracking software on the computer BEFORE it was 'borrowed', it would be virtually impossible to get the IP UNLESS you can trick the borrower into doing something like clicking on a specially crafted link in an email that you have configured to grab and record the IP or some other tricky and equally technical things

2) You were told wrong about knowing the IP address will make it trackable. Knowing the IP will (usually) let you know who the ISP is of the network that it's connected to at that moment, and (usually) will give you a general geographic location - usually within 5-20 miles.. sometimes it's off by hundreds or thousands of miles, depending who the ISP is.

... sadly, there is virtually nothing you can do. Since it is an acquaintance, your best bet (by far) is to call the acquaintance (or, their parents) and demand that it be returned - or, maybe, file a stolen property report with the police.

My daughter has learned a hard lesson. Thank you for your comments and yes, she has filed a police report.
