'Idol' contestant's dad booted from backstage

I wonder if this is going to affect any votes for David Archuleta. Too bad this is coming out so close to the finale.

'Idol' contestant's dad booted from backstage

Backstage meddling has caught up "American Idol" favorite David Archuleta's dad, who's been banned from rehearsals, a person working for the TV talent contest said Friday.

Jeff Archuleta was told this week by producers that he can no longer join his 17-year-old son David as he prepares for the show, the person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press. The person wasn't authorized to comment publicly and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The show's action was first reported Friday by the online Web site TMZ.

David Archuleta of Murray, Utah, is one of three contestants left as the top-rated Fox show heads toward the May 20-21 finale. The fresh-faced teenager with the big voice has consistently been deemed a front-runner by the judges and been a consistent fan favorite.

Jeff Archuleta's intense backstage involvement had become a source of concern for the series, the person connected with "American Idol" said -- but it was a lyric change on Tuesday's show that pushed producers to act.

Despite a warning, Jeff Archuleta insisted on altering "Stand by Me," one of two songs his son sang on the show Tuesday. By adding a verse from Sean Kingston's "Beautiful Girls," the father incurred additional costs for "American Idol," the person said.

Fox declined comment. Attempts to reach Jeff Archuleta for comment were unsuccessful. A phone number listed under his name in Murray, Utah, was no longer in service, and Fox did not immediately respond to a request Friday evening for help in contacting the family.

Earlier Friday, David Archuleta was honored at a hometown celebration held at his high school in Murray, during which Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman declared "David Archuleta Day."

The singer and his family declined to be interviewed at the event, but David Archuleta did speak with the Salt Lake City Fox affiliate, KSTU-TV. "Wow," he exclaimed as he viewed the cheerleading squad outside his stretch limousine.

The other finalists left in competition for the "Idol" title and a record contract are David Cook and Syesha Mercado. Cook, a native of suburban Blue Springs, Mo., had his own homecoming celebration Friday in Kansas City, while Mercado was feted in Bradenton, Fla

I saw that!  I haven't seen any other stories coming out of AI to back this up, so I wasn't sure how much truth was in it.  I knew his dad was heavily "involved" the point where he was picking the songs David sang and sometimes disturbing the other contestants making sure David had an edge.  I think I made some snide innuendos about his dad in some earlier posts here.  My guess is someone (fellow or past contestant) complained to producers.

AI should have put their foot down sooner and told Jeff A that all contestants must be potty-trained and should have had enforced rules in place regarding coaching/advising.  I'll bet this type of thing will be scrutinized more thoroughly in the future.  Live and learn.  People pushing the rules and sh*tting on everyone else is what causes more strict rules.

It's crazy, eh......Dad apparently wants showbiz more than the kid.

Yeah, my mom spolied it for me! I was unable to watch eliminations, and she busts out with calling me and squealing about who got booted!!!!

So it's David vs David.  I haven't watched this week's two shows yet because my wife ruined it for me.  I don't get a chance to watch TV until Thursday and Thursday morning, we were having a playful fight before I left for work and she one-upped me by saying, "Just for that - SYESHA!"  So she spoiled it.  :(

It better be David Cook or they should change the rules to stop multiple votes.

I think it was pretty obvious all along that it would be the 2 Davids in the finals. Although, I thought Carly should have been in 3rd place or closer to the top than where she finished. Also, Fox announced that the elimination shows will now be cut back to 30 min rather than 1 hour for the upcoming season. Thanks goodness. I just fast fwd my TiVo through it anyway.

I agree the eliminations are far too long! And I'm soooooo jealous! You have tivoYell lol.

I wanted Carly closer to the top too......but Syesha is pretty stinkin good(or was lol)

Simon predicted it to be the 2 David's a while back.

OK... why do you guys think everyone was so hard on Syesha on performance night?

She was almost scolded for the songs she sang.... am I right in saying she only picked one song herself and the other two were picked by the producer and Randy?  That's what I remember but I had a few beers.  I also remember her short dress.  Anyway..   I already erased it off my DVR but I thought she did well and showed sparkle and a couple more sides we haven't seen.

Even Paula expressed dissappointed about the songs.  I knew she would be eliminated because of the talent of the two Davids but she still did all three songs well and I don't think she deserved the shaking heads of disapproval.  Paula acted almost offended.  Was this manipulation by the judges or am I just smitten and biased?
