Interpreting these lyrics

Theres a semi-new song out and I think it would be interesting to see how different people interpret the lyrics. If you have an interpretation of the lyrics (especially the chorus) please share with me. TIA Kiss

"Violet Hill" by coldplay

Was a long and dark December
From the rooftops I remember
There was snow
White snow

Clearly I remember
From the windows they were watching
While we froze down below

When the future's architectured
By a carnival of idiots on show
You'd better lie low

(chorus)
If you love me
Won't you let me know?

Was a long and dark December
When the banks became cathedrals
And the fog
Became God

Priests clutched onto bibles
And went out to fit their rifles
And the cross was held aloft

Bury me in honor
When I'm dead and hit the ground
A love back home unfolds

If you love me
Won't you let me know?

I don't want to be a soldier
With the captain of some sinking ship
With snow, far below

(chorus)
So if you love me
Why'd you let me go?

I took my love down to violet hill
There we sat in snow
All that time she was silent still

So if you love me
Won't you let me know?

If you love me,
Won't you let me know?

Seems like a reference to the use of religious belief, to fuel war for economic gain, banks not actually becoming cathedrals, but being influenced by the hierarchy of the major religion in a society. It's a tragic truth throughout the history of every culture and religion.

Re: Interpreting these lyrics

Hi Guys, I think that there's the definite reference of money being what is worshiped and in our blindness, it has become our God. the reference of bibles and rifles shows us the hypocrisy of war. another line that is also indicative of   hypocrisy is "from the windows they were watching, while we froze down below". this shows us how there are some that are safe and warm behind the shelter of the windows, while there are those who go out to be the soldiers, risking life and limb.as far as the chorus,  i think that means just what it asks, except the first is being asked as a future question and the second is asked as a past tense question,"why'd you let me go?"....juliek..

Re: Interpreting these lyrics

I think the chorus could be more figurative then the usual relationship love,  since the main theme of this song seems to be war and hypocrisy. The line "if you love me" could be taken as a soldier asking his president or prime minister "If you care about me". The line "why'd you let me go" could also be taken as a soldier being thrust into a war zone by someone who constantly talks about support, protection and safety, so why let him go into harms way if you really care?

P.S. Not Preaching

Re: Interpreting these lyrics

I like that interpretation, It's nice that artists have started to stop telling people what every lyric in their songs are about, so we can have fun trying to figure them out ourselves. Though the main story of some songs needs to be known, because you can get a false sense for a song, and it can ruin the felling you once had when you find it out.

I wish the rest of the art world would take this course and only tell you the story, and stop telling you the meaning. Imagination means nothing unless you're an artistic aristocrat, but thats a different story.

Re: Interpreting these lyrics

i think its a love song between a man and woman.  similar to 'the girl from ipanema.' i think the man has a great affection for the woman and considers her pure as snow and a source of strength.  he also talks about their compatibility and despite what others may say, he sees potential for a long future between them.  but the girl seems unaware of her romeo and may miss out.
