IP address conflict

This little bubble keeps popping up in the lower right corner saying "Windows System Error-There is an IP address conflict with another computer on this network." We have checked the IP address on all of our computers and laptops and they are the same. Anyone heard of this?

could a neighbor be using your internet wirelessly?

No, it's password protected. And it seems as of this morning the problem is gone since it hasn't popped up again...we'll see!

Re: IP address conflict

the two devices set to the same IP would have to be on at the same time to get the error. do you have networked printers or did someone come over with a laptop? I'm guessing you have a home network and you're using the ISP's IP on your router, with the internal IP set of 192.168.1.??? on machines and devices. If there's no router involved, I'd call my ISP next time it happens.

Re: IP address conflict

when this bubble pops-up, do you lose internet/network connectivity ?
I also echo Clark's question - Is your wireless secured?

We used to get that all the time at work, we'd just change the ip on one of the machines and it was resolved.

If you keep your settings set to "automatically detect setting" it should resolve itself. It just means that abother computer is showing the same IP on you netowrk.

This sometimes happens with multiple wireless users or when network printers and network storage devices power on and off.
