Ok, so I've been corresponding with one person over the course of many months via yahoo. I have saved all of their messages and was going through the headers looking at IP addresses to match my trackspace account. Anyways, I caught some weird stuff. This individual is supposedly on a research trip off the coast of Florida. The different IP addresses that I got from this said individual varied over time (this is a COX communications IP) and their locales that I get from an IP lookup engine is throwing me off, I can't make sense of it. Is there anyone here that is willing to help me? I have the IP addresses and the locations that they said they were originating from. Perhaps someone who is more knowledgeable can make sense of it. Please message me if you're willing to help, I'd great appreciate it. This has caused some mixed emotions.
You cannot pinpoint someones exact location with an ip address. (unless you are "gov").
Sounds to me like they have a dynamic ip address. (dynamic ip addresses change often, that explains for the numerous different ip's you are seeing.)
That ISP you mentioned has been known to reflect the actual city (or close by) that the person is actually located in. And then sometimes, it will show the city and state of where the ISP is located in that region.
It sounds like you should be fine :)
ah...thank you Pat. Not being as knowledgeable with IPs, got me all twisted inside, lol.
Appreciate your input and feedback. :)
Check the IP's at DNS stuff dot com, it will show which city it is from, with a cox IP it will show a 2 letter city code xx.xx.cox.net

Well, with Wireless modems and the Laptops that uses them IPs are more of a computers ID then it's gaurenteed location nowadays. Much easier to Gaurentee where a computer was when it was only Desktops or Mini-Servers...lol
Them Laptops and their "Wi-Fi" do hop from provider to provider when roaming rather freely as long as the area is compatible with the Wireless Service...so I am guessing the varied IP locations are the "hard Point" relays (as in the actual ground Lines his/her service has to travel through at the moment) rather then the actual location of the computer or "soft relays' (Areas spanned by Wi-Fi,Wireless transmittion, and Sattilite relays)
Only one that can really give anyone the actual name and Residental address of the COmputer's Owner, including government officals, is the the actual Internet Service Provider (not neccisarily the exact whereabouts though)
