Is Android Destroying Smartphone Competition?

Android is winning

This week a European lobby filed a complaint against Google that could seriously hurt Google’s chances of spreading Android through Europe. The lobby that filed the complaint is made up of companies like Nokia, Microsoft, Oracle, and a few others, and if their complaint is acknowledged it could be serious trouble for Google. The basic premise of the complaint is that Google is killing competition by distributing software below cost.

Currently Android is freely available to developers as long as a few conditions are met, and that is exactly what the complaint claims makes it illegal. Google is essentially being accused of making Android into a free “Trojan horse” that forces Google services and products onto the user simply because Android itself is free. There hasn’t been any official response by Google at this point, though they’re surely going to fight this as much as they can. No word on when any official legal proceedings might begin.
