Is a Baofeng UV-5R a good ham radio?

I want to get my ham license but I dont want to spend $400 for a small ham radio and i found these Baofeng UV5r on Amazon for $30. is the uv-5R good for getting started in amateur radio? if it is, why is it so much cheaper than all the other handheld radio brands?

Re: Is a Baofeng UV-5R a good ham radio?

The UV-5R like most of the Baofeng radios are cheap Chinese knock-offs with cheap parts and terrible quality control. All that said, they are still good little radios especially if you are new to amateur radio. Because they only cost $25 if it breaks or you drop it on the driveway, who cares? Spend another $25 and get a new one! The biggest drawback these Baofeng radios is that they are not easy to program repeaters or certain other advanced settings via the keypad, but it's very easy to program on your computer using CHIRP software and a $15 cable, so for most people this is not an issue..
There has been some controversy about the UV-5R because they dont have FCC approval to operate on certain (NON ham) frequencies and the FCC has banned the sale of certain models of the UV5R starting in September (?) 2019.. My guess is that Baofeng will come out with an updated model that complies with all the rules, if they havn't already.

Bottom line is that the Baofeng UV5R is not as good something like a Yaesu that costs 10X more - so the question is, are these more expensive radios like Yaesus 10X better? For someone just getting into amateur radio the answer is probably NO .. So get a Baofeng, enjoy it, then when you grow out of it and need something better, get one of the more expensive radios based on what you decide you need.

My point exactly.. That's why for a beginner that does not have a lot of money to throw around, a $30 Baofeng might be a better choice.

the baofengs are good radios FOR THE PRICE.. they are junk compared to a $400 or $500 radio, but for $40 they do the job and you seriously cannot go wrong. I have a few and even with their little glitches and bugs i love them.
