lost music

hi Guys,i'm wonderin' if anyone knows if there is a way to find music files that were lost a long time ago. this happened when i knew much, much less than i know now. imagine how pathetic that was! i must've been in the negative numbers on my knowledge of computer scale! eww boyEmbarassed anyway, a friend had told me to save anything that was important to me, and of course, because i was too embarrassed to say "what does that mean", i just said okay, all set. Then i'm pretty sure that was when he installed windows xp, work edition...and i think you can figure the rest...i lost a huge music playlist and my heart has since been aching! well, not really aching, but i was sooo stupid! anyway, any shot of finding this playlist somewhere in there? thanks for the help and thanks for listening to my nonsense...juliek

If the new install of Windows was an upgrade, they might still be in there.  Go to Start>Search, then "Pictures, Music, or Video", click Music.  If you don't have that option, do a regular search for music file types by putting *.mp3 in the search criteria window.  The asterisk symbol is a wildcard symbol. The search will look for anything ending with .mp3.  You can also try to search for wma files by using *.wma.

But if your friend reformatted your drive before installing the current version of Windows, your music is gone.  :(

For the future, I recommend getting an external hard drive ($60 and up at Newegg.com).  These are boxes about the size of a regular size book and it plugs into your USB slot.  Plugging this in adds a storage drive to your PC where you can store and access your music, pictures, tax files, word documents, exported backups, etc.  A Windows crash will not affect the external hard drive and it can also be plugged into another PC and the same data can be accessed from there.

Re: lost music

Is your music also on an iPod? If so there are free programs that will pull the music off your iPod back to the computer. Google ephpod. If you have podcasts on the iPod it will mess with ephpod so delete them and add them back on after.
