The Ultimate DIY Install: The NEST

The Nest Thermostat is the fastest and easiest way to make your house look like a real geek lives there. This thing is awesome:

Problems With the NEST Thermostat

It's been about two seeks that we've had our NEST Thermostat so I wanted to post an update.

Learning is complete! It looks like the NEST has picked up on when we turn the heat on/off in the house and for the last few days it's been doing everything automatically.

Auto Away actually works! From the beginning I was worried that the NEST would not really know if we were home or not and was concerned that it would either turn on Auto Away while we were watching TV for an extended period or sleeping - or that it would not activate Auto Away until we were actually gone for several hours, negating the efficiency. Well not only has the Nest never activated Auto Away when we were home, last night we went out to dinner for only about an hour and a half and when we got back, Auto Away had been activated. I dont know HOW it knows that we were actually not home vs just sitting in the next room for hours, but, it does.

We've had two problems with the Nest: After several days the Auto Approach (lighting up when you get near it) stopped working. The only way we could get the Nest to wake up would be to press it or turn the ring. The other issue is that it got sluggish and slow to respond - this might have been a precursor to Auto Approach stopping but I wasn't really paying attention. In both cases performing a 'reset' from the interface effectively reboots the Nest and fixes the problem. Even while these problems existed, it still controlled the heating/cooling normally.

It's not perfect but we still love this thing and are now on the waiting list (sold out again!) to get a second Nest.

Why do you need a second?

For the "east wing" of the house :-)

We have an add-on that has it's own Heat/AC and thermostat and we're sick of looking at the ugly $20 thermostat that's there now. AND, when you have two NESTs, they communicate to share data.. and stuff..
